Henry VIII (1509-1547) Highest office: King Loyalty: 10
Life expectancy: 10 Nobility: 10 Catholic: 6 Protestant: 4 Combustibility: 0 Power: 10 Proximity: 10 In 1527 Henry argued that his marriage to Catherine of Aragon contravened Leviticus (18:16 and 20:21) and that since scripture could not be dispensed it should be annulled. Pope Clement VII’s refusal led to the break with Rome through parliamentary statute. Subsequently, Henry married AB, made himself head of the Church in England. Foreign policy, faction at court, humanist influence and the need for finance may have subsequently influenced Henry’s religious policies but H. remained steadfastly committed to the the headship over the English church and to a basically Catholic theology for the rest of his reign.
