1 Isotopes and RAM Learning Outcomes:
I know the definition of an isotopes I know the definition for RAM I know the calculation for RAM Success Criteria: I can identify isotopes I can explain why two examples are isotopes I can calculate the RAM of an element I can determine which isotope of an element is the most abundant from the RAM.

2 STARTER Work out the number of protons, electrons and neutrons for each example

3 Work out the number of protons, electrons and neutrons for each example

4 P = 1 E = 1 N = 0 P = 5 E = 5 N = 6

5 P = 8 E = 8 N = 8 P = 11 E = 11 N = 12

6 P = 17 E = 17 N = 18 P = 92 E = 92 N = 146

7 Isotopes Atoms with the same atomic number and different mass number
ie same number of protons, different number of neutrons.

8 Most elements exist as a mixture of isotopes, e. g
Most elements exist as a mixture of isotopes, e.g. chlorine has 2 isotopes. P = 17 E = 17 N = 18 P = 17 E = 17 N = 20

9 Relative Atomic Mass (RAM)
RAM is the average mass of the isotopes present, taking their relative proportions into account. RAM = (%1 x mass1) + (%2 x mass2) 100

10 1. 10B has an abundance of 20% and 11B has an abundance of 80%
1. 10B has an abundance of 20% and 11B has an abundance of 80%. What is the RAM of Boron? RAM = (%1 x mass1) + (%2 x mass2) 100 = (20 x 10) + (80 x 11) = = 10.8

11 2. Chlorine has two isotopes (Cl 35 and Cl
2. Chlorine has two isotopes (Cl 35 and Cl 37), of a 100 atom sample, 75 are Cl 35 and 25 are Cl 37. RAM = (35 X 75) + (37 X 25) = 35.5 100 Therefore the RAM of Chlorine is 35.5

12 3. Hydrogen has three isotopes, 1H, 2H and 3H. The RAM is 1. 001
3. Hydrogen has three isotopes, 1H, 2H and 3H. The RAM is Which isotope is the most abundant? 4. Silicon has three isotopes, 28Si, 29Si and 30Si. The RAM is Which isotope is the most abundant?

13 5. Bromine has two isotopes (Br 79 and Br 81)
5. Bromine has two isotopes (Br 79 and Br 81). There are equal number of each isotope present (50% Br 79, 50% Br81). What is the RAM?

14 6. Using your data book (P7) fill in the missing information....
