13. Corruption & Problems in the Catholic Church

Closed-mindedness: Thinking about the universe or science in new ways was not allowed. Scientific exploration restricted (especially with medicine). Acceptance of other faiths was not tolerated
Pope’s getting caught up in politics: Starting wars with monarchs, plotting against kings who were too powerful, etc.
Corruption:
In order to get more money, some pope’s started selling indulgences: ticket to heaven; forgive sinful behavior (put simply)
Using power to support unsavory behavior... Popes and other catholic leaders would over drink, over eat and even had concubines… this “non-Christian” behavior angered followers
Although early protestors were executed by The Church, all these events still led up to the Protestant Reformation

He believed That EVERYONE should have access to the Church: Not just Popes and priests. This meant that he believed…
Ordinary people should be able to read the Bible, so it was translated into German (the common vernacular & Luther’s language)
Every town should have a school so kids could learn how to read the Bible
Church services should be simple, so everyone can understand and take part in them
No more indulgences, confession, prayers to saints. Church should be about improving THIS life, not worrying about the next.
LARGE POINT OF DIFFERNCE 
Protestants: you can access God and heaven personally and do not need the institution of the Church = Humanistic
Catholics: You need the Church and religious leaders to help you access God and Heaven
Printing Press: making information and knowledge accessible to the masses = literacy increase
