2 Middle Ages Review Roman Catholic church was the center of life for the people The church played a role in the government: collected taxes, made laws, waged wars (crusades military expeditions to take back the holy lands in Southwest Asia from Muslim control)

3 Middle Ages Review Western Europe was made of many kingdoms. These kingdoms of western Europe were often at war. Charlemagne (German Frank) tried to unify Western Europe which ended after his death in 814.

4 Middle Ages Review Feudal system- social structure
King, Lords, Vassals, Serfs/Peasants Growth of towns helped end the Feudal system Bubonic Plague (1347) also helped weaken the feudal system Killed millions reducing the workforce in towns Employers offered high wages Farmers left the countryside/manors to seek better jobs in towns

5 Renaissance (What? Where? When? How?)
Rebirth of art and learning Italy in 1300s Scholars from the Eastern European Empire came to Italy, after it fell to the Ottomans, and brought ideas of Romans and Greeks Trade increased the wealth allowing people to buy art Art became more humanistic and less religious Printing press was developed and provided books to even the poor Greek and Roman architecture was used again

Martin Luther Upset by corrupt practices of some priests Indulgences: buy forgiveness 95 Theses He wanted the church to reform/change

From Portugal Began the Age of Exploration

10 Why? Gold The Ottoman Empire shut down land trade routes to India and China after capturing Constantinople in 1453 To find new trade routes to Asia for spices, silk, and gems Convert people to Christianity claim lands for their country Colony- area controlled by a distant country

11 Effects of Colonization and Exploration
Sharing of goods and ideas Columbian Exchange Europeans received new food (potatoes, corn, tomatoes) from the Americas The Americas received wheat, barley, and diseases from the Europeans
