2. Why Durham?
I chose to study a place that I am interested in. My family grew up in Durham, and I have lived here most of my life. My family has told me about many of the changes around here, but I was eager to know more.

3. Durham early 1900s
The main mode of transportation was cars, but you can see that the cars are very different from the cars we have today! People also went places by walking.
People lived with their families in houses and apartments.
Many people worked in the Tobacco Industry, in textile mills and on the railroad.

4. Durham 2007
The main mode of transportation is cars and buses. In the downtown areas and near Duke, many people walk and bike.
Just like in the early 1900s, people still live in houses and apartments.
Many people in Durham are affiliated with Duke University and Duke Hospital. A lot of people work in the Research Triangle Park, as well.

5. What has changed?
I think the most significant change is the population. Durham has grown from just 2000 people in the early 1900s to 210,000 in 2007!!
That’s 208,000 more!!
