Everyone 2 and older needs 3 cups. per day. 8 oz. of milk equals one serving.

Vitamin A-fortified in non-fat milks (eyesight and skin) Vitamin D-fortified, must be avaliable for absorpotion of calcium and phosphorus Calcium-lack of calcium causes osteoporosis Phosphorous Riboflavin-B vitamin (energy and metabolism)

Milk is considered the closest to the “perfect” food group that there is. Think about a babies first year of life and the foods that they eat.

4 Ways that Milk is Processed:
Dehydrated- all of the liquid has been removed. Pasteurized-heated and cooled to kill harmful bacteria. Homogenized- suspending the fat particles in the milk.

5 Types of Milk Whole Milk: Contains all original nutrients, no fat has been removed, 3.5% FAT Low-Fat Milk: 2 % milk is reduced fat milk, 1% is low-fat milk. Skim Milk: almost all of the fat has been removed, same nutrients as whole milk, has been fortified with vit. A Cream: Fatty liquid that has separated from whole milk, 18% fat, can buy heavy or light cream

6 Types of Milk Cont. Half and Half: Mixture of cream and milk, same rich taste of cream, less fat calories. Evaporated Milk: Begins as whole milk, heated to remove 60% of the water, add water to make it like whole milk. Sweetened Condensed Milk: Half the water is removed, sugar is added, used for candies and baking. Nonfat Dry Milk (Powdered Milk): all the moisture and most of the fat is removed, nutrients of skim milk, ½ calories of whole milk, used for baking and drinking.

7 Cooking with Milk Milk and Cheese burn easily.
To prevent scorching use a heavy pan or a double broiler. To prevent a skin from forming on the top layer and losing nutrients: Cook on a low temperature Stir vigorously if a skin is appearing Cover the pan Follow directions when cooking with milk or cheese

Where do fruits and vegetables come from? What is the difference between skim, low fat, reduced fat and whole milk? What age needs whole milk? Everyone of the age of 2 should drink skim milk!
