How do you make the best soup?
SE Wales care sector stakeholders contributed their views, knowledge and experience on good practice activities, which show how dignity and respect is embedded in the care services they provide. These good practices have supported improved person-centred care across the region The content was obtained at the following events held in 2011 by Social Care in Partnership (South East): Focus groups at employer engagement conference. ‘How do you make the best soup?’ event.

PRACTICAL Care Activities which underpin the Care Council Code of Practice and which have proved successful: Practical Coffee mornings every fortnight, which consists of baking a cake prior to the event. Pamper afternoons, foot spas, bucks fizz, fruit dipped in chocolate. Hairdressing salon Mobile shop – residents can purchase their own items Arts and Crafts Cookery – Pizza making residents choose toppings, roll out dough. Pottery Flower arranging. Salt dough activities Cartoon drawing Jigsaws Large and small Card making Painting Going out for tea Shopping trip Lunch at the local pub. Feeding the ducks at the local park

PRACTICAL Care Activities which underpin the Care Council Code of Practice and which have proved successful: Practical [Continued] Wine Tasting Pat a Pet Picture Collage Non-Cook Cooking Building a photo album Life in the care home album Age Concern activities Carpentry Camera Club Making fat balls for birds Pottery Links to the local primary school Art Classes

CULTURAL Care Activities which underpin the Care Council Code of Practice and which have proved successful: Cultural Downloading titles of listening books for a lending period of choice for visually impaired residents. Themed days. Saints days, National days, Famous birthdays (opportunity to dress up). Story telling Library choose your own books. Reminiscence days Computer facilities Cooking, baking, washing up, housework Involving residents in peeling vegetables. Making seasonal decorations. Making mosaic tea coasters Making mosaic tiles from e-bay, plain wooden coasters –its very messy but really good fun Visits to Art Galleries Visit to the Theatre Starting a choir – concerts ‘Around the World’ days ~ pick country and make a day of that country [food/traditional dress] Recapture the community viewing old photographs

SPORT & ENTERTAINMENT Care Activities which underpin the Care Council Code of Practice and which have proved successful: Sport Rugby, Football, Grand national, tennis, -snacks and beer River Rafting in Cardiff Wii – e.g. Indoor bowls. Magnetic darts tournament Skittles Hoopla Entertainment Music / Dance Therapy Using different tools e.g. Chiffon scarves, hoops, balls, coloured batons, hats. Pop the question quiz, put questions inside balloons, residents pop balloon and read out the question. Music: Clubbing, Minskys free Millennium centre. Pub nights, range of drinks, bar snacks, pub sing along CD. Jokes afternoon Treasure hunt. Belly dancing Karaoke afternoons, evenings X Factor Karaoke machine. Bingo Poetry and afternoon tea. Fireworks Block busters Name that tune Short homemade movies – ‘This is my life and this is my awareness’ Cinema – watch a film and have ice cream during the interval
