Economic system that unifies and increases the power and wealth of a nation

4. colony
a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that country.

5. Navigation Act
 (1651, 1660) were acts of Parliament intended to promote the self-sufficiency of the British Empire by restricting colonial trade to England and decreasing dependence on foreign imported goods. The Navigation Act of 1651, aimed primarily at the Dutch, required all trade between England and the colonies to be carried in English or colonial vessels

6. Smuggling
move (goods) illegally into or out of a country.

7. Religious Toleration
people allowing other people to think or practice other religions and beliefs. In a country with a state that the government allows other religions to be there.

8. Patroon
a person given land and granted certain manorial privileges under the former Dutch governments of New York and New Jersey.

9. racism
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

10. Proprietary Colony
was a type of British colony mostly in North America and the Caribbean in the 17th century. In the British Empire, all land belonged to the ruler, and it was his prerogative to divide.

11. slave code
were state laws established to determine the status of slaves and the rights of their owners. Slave codes placed harsh restrictions on slaves' already limited freedoms, often in order to preempt rebellion or escape, and gave slave owners absolute power over their slaves.

12. Indentured Servant
person under contract to work for another person for a definite period of time, usually without pay but in exchange for free passage to a new country. During the seventeenth century most of the white laborers in Maryland and Virginia came from England.

13. Royal Colony
ruled or administered by officials appointed by and responsible to the reigning sovereign of the parent state.

14. Mayflower Compact
An agreement reached by the Pilgrims on the ship the Mayflower in 1620, just before they landed at Plymouth Rock. The Mayflower Compact bound them to live in a civil society according to their own laws.

15. House of Burgesses
the lower house of the colonial Virginia legislature.

16. Middle Passage
the sea journey undertaken by slave ships from West Africa to the West Indies.

17. Triangular Trade
a multilateral system of trading in which a country pays for its imports from one country by its exports to another.
used to refer to the trade in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that involved shipping goods from Britain to West Africa to be exchanged for slaves, these slaves being shipped to the West Indies and exchanged for sugar, rum, and other commodities, which were in turn shipped back to Britain.

18. Bacon Rebellion
 was an armed rebellion in 1676 by Virginia settlers led by Nathaniel Bacon against the rule of Governor William Berkeley.

19. Theocracy
a system of government in which priests rule in the name of God or a god.

20. Apprentice
a person who is learning a trade from a skilled employer, having agreed to work for a fixed period at low wages.
