2 THE HUMAN BODY The first and fundamental principle of wellbeing is that we must take care of the organism that transports us around from place to place: the extraordinary human body. Imagine your body like a car. Cars need servicing and fuelled just like we need check ups and to eat. Put diesel in a petrol car and it won’t work properly –eat the wrong foods and we don’t work properly, simple as that. what kind of toxins could humans put into their system that would make them breakdown? Discuss them as a class.

kAAA Think about different substances and activities that are toxic to us. Explain the effects of such toxins on the body and to our personalities.

5 sleep How many hours sleep do we need a night to function well the next day? Adults need 8 however a 13 year old requires 9.5 hours sleep per day. Sleep is vital, as it is our body’s chance to rest from physical exertions. The mind also makes use of it to process the experiences of the day, which it does through dreaming. If we deprive ourselves from sleep, it makes us un-coordinated and unable to function well. Sleep is also vitally important to learning.

12 WHO HAS GOALS? Why is it so few people set goals?
Less than 5% of people have goals. Less than 1% of people write them down. Yet the most successful and richest people in the world are compulsive goal setters.

13 WHY DO SO FEW PEOPLE SET GOALS?
They don’t understand the importance of setting goals. They don’t know how to set goals. The fear of rejection. The fear of failure Think of your life as a football game, what would the game be like if there were no goals? Discuss!

14 Only 3% of graduating students had set goals for their lives.
1953 STUDY AT YALE UNIVERSITY Only 3% of graduating students had set goals for their lives. 20 years later in 1973 they went back and found that this 3% of students who had set goals were worth more financially than all of the other 97% of students who didn’t set goals put together.

15 Think of 1 big goal you have!
Discuss this goal with the class or in pairs. Do you think it is important to have goals? Imagine a football game with no goals. Discuss what you think a football game would be like without goals? Life is the same as a football game – without having a goal it’s difficult to score!!

16 EXCELLENCE Every human being has the ability to be average at certain things However we all have the ability to achieve excellence in at least one or more specific area We all have something valuable and special to offer the human race It is our responsibility to find out what we are excellent at!

17 LET’S SET SOME GOALS What are the 5 things you value most in your life? In 30 seconds or less write down the 3 most important goals in your life. What would you do if you won £ in the lottery tomorrow? What would you do if you learned today that you only had 6 months to live?

6. What type of activity gives you the greatest feeling of self worth – the greatest feeling of importance, self satisfaction, joy? 7. Imagine a genie granted you one wish – but that wish had to be something to do with your future – what would you wish for?

24 How well do you listen Find a partner and sit face to face with them – nothing in between you like a table. Number yourselves 1 and 2. Partner 1 thinks of a story they want to share with the other person. It might be a particular birthday you remember, a holiday, a time when you won something, or a sad time in your life – it should be a story that shows an emotion (sad, happy, funny, exciting). Partner 2 has to sit and listen to the story but is not allowed to change facial expressions, nod head, or speak however everytime they feel they want to show a facial expression such as a smile or nod their head either in agreement or disagreement or speak because you have something to add or a question partner 2 should raise their hand for 1 second then lower it again. Notice the number of times you are distracted from your partners story by your own thought patterns. Partner 1 now thinks of another story and this time partner 2 should focus all their attention on listening – really listening – making eye contact. Partner 2 should comment on the difference between the two – how did it make them feel. Swap over.

25 WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE
The Government Office for Science found in that being able to connect well with the people around you was one of the most important parts to your happiness and wellbeing. People who function well in the world are able to develop positive relationships with the people they come into contact with on a daily basis. This includes friends, teachers, parents, strangers etc.

26 HOMEWORK Think about your own friendships. What are the ingredients that make them work? How do you think your friendships will change as you get older? What do you think is the most important part of being a friend to someone?
