1. Raoul Dufy (June 3, 1877- March 23,1953)
Our artist for today is Raoul Dufy. We will talk about many interesting parts of his life and his painting style, but there are 3 important things in particular that he used in his paintings that I would like you to be able to describe at the end of our discussion. We will talk about those three important things throughout our presentation, so pay close attention. At the end of our presentation, we will do an art project using the same important things that Raoul Dufy used so you can create your very own masterpiece.

2. Raoul Dufy was born in Le Havre, France on June 3, 1877 over 134 years ago. What do you notice about Le Havre? Is it near the water? Le Havre means the harbor or the port. A port is a city or town located on a waterway (here it is the ocean, it could be on a river or lake) with places to load and unload ships and boats.

3. WATER COLOR LINES 1) color and 2) lines
Raoul Dufy began to study art at the age of 18.
He really liked impressionism which was a type of art movement where
painters were known for their use of light, color and movement to
express their feelings through their art.
Dufy was known for his cheerful, brightly colored and highly decorative
scenes which many people said was his way of expressing happiness in life.
Raoul Dufy used 2 important things to express his feelings in his art work:
1) color
and
2) lines
We are going to talk about both of these important things in our next
few slides.

4. WATER
We talked about Le Havre being a port city and that Dufy was born there. See how the water is the biggest thing you see? Water is a prominent feature in Dufy’s paintings.

5. COLOR
In some of Dufy’s paintings he would use many bright color to show his feelings and how he felt about something, not to show it exactly how it was. How do you think Dufy felt about the people and activities in this painting?

6. COLOR Show blue color chart.
In this painting he uses one main color and then uses different shades of that color throughout the painting. As we talked about earlier, Dufy lived near the water and he loved many shades of blue so many of his paintings had varying shades of blue.

7. LINES
Lines - The second important thing that Dufy used in his paintings to show his feelings was lines. He used lines to show movement.
Horizontal and vertical lines = calm, little or no movement
Diagonal lines = movement
Look at the lines in this picture. What directions do they go? Horizontal (side to side), Vertical (Up and down), Diagonal (like the side of a triangle). Have kids stand up and stand straight like a pencil (vertical line, no movement). Have kids (be careful of their neighbors!) wave their arms and dance a little bit. Are they keeping straight lines?

8. LINES
Look at the lines in this painting? What direction are they going?

9. This is a famous picture by Raoul Dufy and it is called “Regatta” which means boat race. Remember how we talked about three important things in Dufy’s paintings?
1) Water
2) Color
3) Lines
Ask children to name the two important things. What colors do you see? Does this look like a happy painting or a sad painting? What kind of lines do you see? Do the boats look still or do they look like they are moving?

We are going to create our own art masterpieces in a few moments, but before we start I would like to mention two more things.
Signing your art is a big part of the creative process. The instant you apply your name to a piece of your art, you declare that art officially finished. No matter what your signature looks like, what form it takes or where you put it, no work of your art is complete without one. So don’t forget to sign your name to your art work.
Another part of the creative process is your mood when you are creating your art. Raoul Dufy felt that there was a close relationship between art and music. He especially liked music written by someone name Mozart. Dufy and Mozart were similar because they both expressed themselves through their work. Dufy through art, Mozart through music.
