October 24th, 25th & 28th, 2016 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM Curriculum Support Specialists: Noreyda Casañas Yusimi Perez-Osteen Mary Tweedy Welcome to our Department of Science Powercast to inform you of the relevant science content, strategies and resources presented to the Science liaisons at the Elementary Science ICAD 3.

Identify effective data analysis tools and resources available to address achievement gaps and communicate with stakeholders. 3 ICAD 2 Smart Goal Reflection
Think about the planning that went into the lesson. Share why you selected the strategy(ies) you implemented in the lesson? How easy/difficult was it to implement in your classroom? Explain. How do you know whether the activity you implemented affected student learning? How does your lesson connect to prior and future learning objectives of your students? ICAD 2 Smart Goal Reflection Reflect on an ICAD 2 activity implemented in your classroom. Participants were asked to reflect on submitted ICAD 2 Smart Goals to develop reflective practices around their classroom instruction (planning and delivery). Participants were able to share reflections with the whole group. First they identified an activity implemented in their classroom and reflected on the planning that went into the lesson, discussed the strategies they used, how easy or difficult was the implementation of the lesson, how was student learning measured and in which way did the lesson connect to prior and future learning objectives. 8 G2D - Reporting Once assessments are scanned (make sure all scanners are updated) data for the test can be analyzed Find the assessment to analyze Time was spent with participants to explore the reporting section in order to identify effective data analysis tools and resources available through G2D.

9 G2D – Reporting Options At Risk (Showing data for scores less than 69%): Standards by Student Standards by Test, Student Students by Domain Students by Standard (hover and click the % number to see specific details on the questions and answers) Subgroups by Standard (default screen) Distractor Analysis (always do this to make sure scan was done correctly) Item Analysis: Click on the District/School/Class box to see responses and identify possible misconceptions. Proficiency Report: Progress Report: Standard Analysis Report: How to use available data analysis tools was presented to participants and in addition, participants were able to log on to their G2D accounts to review their students’ data using reports such as: at risk, distractor analysis, item analysis, proficiency report, progress report, standard analysis report.

10 G2D Activity In groups, explore each type of reporting option for Topic Assessment 1 Discuss and share findings for each option: Why is this type of analysis useful? What report(s) should you focus on? Time was given to explore each type of reporting option to review topic assessment 1 data. Participants reflected on the usefulness for each report: At Risk report: allows you to group standards or students at risk, useful for selecting DI groups and tutoring “bubble” students Distractor Analysis report: identifies distractors based on class responses Item Analysis report: shows how students answered questions which can guide the teacher to probe students for possible misconceptions Proficiency Report – shows students counts and refers to percent correct; be aware that the proficiency is set at 69% or higher

11 ACTIVITY: Q2 Big Idea 10 and 11
Collaborative Planning ACTIVITY: Q2 Big Idea 10 and 11 Develop hands-on activity using available resources. Using Unwrapping the Benchmark 2.0 Item Specification Pacing Guide District resources Share and model lesson with whole group. As part of developing standards-based lessons through planning, implementation and feedback, participants worked collaboratively to develop hands-on activities for quarter 2 Big Idea 10: Forms of Energy and Big Idea 11: Energy Transfer. It was essential for participants to access and use District’s pacing guides which are vetted and aligned to standards, online District’s power point presentations which include research based resources, and grade 5 item specifications to unwrap the benchmarks and understand why it is important to pay attention to clarifications and content limits on Forms and energy and Energy Transfer. Participants also used Discovery Education and explore learning gizmos virtual labs online resources purchased by the District that are also aligned with the science standards. They developed, presented and modeled a 5 Es lesson plan which was uploaded and shared with everyone through the Elementary ICAD digital staff notebook collaboration space. Department of Science

12 Lesson Feedback Did the lesson: Support the standard
Match the rigor and level of complexity of the standard Engage learners Address learner’s needs (ELLs, SPED) Contain an exploration to apply lesson content Make real world connections Evaluate student understanding of content (formative/informative assessment) Incorporate collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking throughout Did the lesson: Each group received feedback from the whole group. The feedback focused around instruction (planning and delivery) of the lesson. Did the lesson: Match the rigor and level of complexity of the standard, Engage learners, Address learner’s needs (ELLs, SPED), Contain an exploration to apply lesson content, Make real world connections, Evaluate student understanding of content (formative/informative assessment), Incorporate collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking throughout the science lesson. 13 What is Good Science Instruction?
Plan Effectively with end in mind – using the NGSSS, Essential Content and Resources identified in the Pacing Guides Implement a routine of inquiry based, hands-on activities relevant to the objectives of the topic through the 5 E’s Instructional Model Develop Higher-Order Questioning Strategies using Explicit-Reflective instruction to enhance student thinking that includes: Encourage students to communicate verbally and in writing Asking questions about surroundings Learning to make systematic observations in order to formulate answers to events that occur in our surroundings Applying models to formulate solutions to questions Questions to Stimulate Student Thinking What is Good Science Instruction? Participants identified good science instruction as: 1. Effective Planning (with the end in Mind) – Knowing your objectives, purpose of the lesson, and learning goals 2. Implementation of lesson - developing a routine of inquiry based, hands-on activities relevant to the objectives of the course 3. Development of High Order Questioning Skills ( Questions to Stimulate Student Thinking link was shared with participants) 4. Facilitate, Encourage, and Expect High Order Thinking from your students to nurture life-long learners who make real world connections. 5. Encouraging students to Communicate verbally and in writing about what they learn Department of Science
