Morning Work - RELA October 6th – October 10th

Monday – October 6, 2014 Demetri came down with the flu on Monday night, and his doctor told him to stay home from school for the rest of the week. She told him that he could do schoolwork on Thursday, but not to overdo it. Over- is a prefix that means “too much” or “more than usual.” So, what does over + do mean? Write the phrase that matches the doctor’s advice to Demertri: “Do schoolwork, but take it easy” or “Be sure to do all of your schoolwork.” How many days was Demetri home not doing schoolwork? Is having the flu an excuse to ignore your schoolwork?

Tuesday – October 7, 2014 Write all of the words with three syllables.
Jose and Gabby needed information for their report on theropods. It was hard to find resources on this dinosaur. They decided not to get another topic. They would leave no stone unturned while looking for information. Write all of the words with three syllables. What are resources? Are theropods common dinosaurs to study? What detail helps you answer that question? What does “leave no stone unturned” mean? Will they turn over every stone they see to look for theropod fossils, or will they look for information everywhere?

Wednesday – October 8, 2014 Rebecca did not finish her math homework last night. She played on the computer instead. She asked her mother to tell her teacher that she had been sick. Her mother told her that she would have to face the music herself. Write the word that is made up of two words put together. What is one word that says what Rebecca asked her mother to do? Did Rebecca make a good choice? Why or why not? What does “face the music herself” mean? Will Rebecca’s teacher play music in class, or must Rebecca accept the consequences of her actions?

Thursday – October 9, 2014 One morning at school you see your friend looking dreamy-eyed. On her paper, she has drawn hearts and flowers. Does the beginning sound of school sound like the beginning sound of skate or shoot? What is the opposite of dreamy-eyed? Do you want to ask you friend about the reason for her behavior? Why or why not? What do you think is going on with your friend?

Friday – October 10, 2014 Bill knew that he was in trouble… big trouble. Ms. Kim, his teacher, had seen him cheating on his test. She had not said anything yet, but Bill knew that she had seen him peek at the little piece of paper hidden in his hand. He chewed on his pencil for a minute and thought. He had to get rid of that paper. But, how? “Bill, if you are finished with your test, would you please come up here?” Bill nodded. His heart was pounding so hard that he could not speak. He bent down to tie one of his shoes. Could he stuff the paper in his shoe? No, Ms. Kim was watching him… waiting for him. Bill swallowed hard. If only he had studied last night, instead of watching that TV show! Then, on the bus this morning, he decided to write a few science facts on a piece of paper and hide it in the palm of his hand. It had been a crazy idea, and now he was going to pay for it.

Friday – October 10, 2014 Bill walked slowly to Ms. Kim’s desk. In a flash, he had an idea! As he stood by her desk, he could let the paper fall into her wastebasket. Later, he could try to get it back again. It was a great idea! Ms. Kim smiled at Bill. “Since you finished first,” she said, “I thought you might like to help me set up our science experiment.” Bill was stunned. What luck! Ms. Kim had not seen his little piece of paper. Now, all he had to do was get it into the wastebasket. As he nodded, he opened his hand. The paper fluttered down. A sudden breeze from an open window made it float down to Ms. Kim’s feet. “Bill, you dropped this,” said Ms. Kim. She picked it up. Then, she looked at it more closely. “What exactly is this?” she asked, looking worried.

Friday – October 10, 2014 List two words that rhyme with loose.
Find two words in the fifth paragraph that could be synonyms. Mark each of these parts of the story with an E for an important event or a D for a story detail. ______ Bill watches tv instead of studying. ______ Ms. Kim calls Bill to her desk. ______ Bill ties one of his shoes. ______ Bill’s heart pounds. ______ Ms. Kim picks up the paper. Did Bill think it was a good idea to cheat on his test at the beginning of the story? Did he change his mind by the end? What does “pay for it” mean?
