1 Registering for Your Sophomore or Junior Year
(In terms of Science)

2 Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
FIRST… Ask yourself Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What are your post-high school plans? ALWAYS pursue your passions. If you have two equal choices, take the one you’d enjoy more. It’s 90 days of your life. What are you interested in?

3 Let’s look at your options…
? ?

4 You’ll need THREE science credits
In order to end up here… You’ll need THREE science credits

5 For most folks, that means passing 9th and 10th grade science classes…BOTH semesters.
But what will year #3 be? ONLY TRUE FOR CLASS OF 2018 – ANY FURTHER CLASSES NEED A 3RD SCIENCE, BUT NO LAB-BASED REQUIREMENT.

6 Vocational/Technical School
After graduation you could head for… Community College Military Service A Job Vocational/Technical School

7 While these science classes WILL meet grad reqs they WON’T necessarily
Animal Science Robotics Plant Science A 4-year college requires MORE “rigor” Sports Medicine While these science classes WILL meet grad reqs they WON’T necessarily help you get into…

8 So what comes after this class?
You do NOT have to take Chemistry next year. Reasons people may put off / not take Chem: Not good at Algebra (get another year of practice) Don’t need it for your future (major) Don’t need it to boost your college application Not planning on taking AP Bio or AP Chem Want to take Physics instead Easy…everybody takes Chemistry…

9 (AP Environmental Science, Physics College Geology, AP Physics)
1 Credit for 9th Grade Science if you passed it. Plans to …ponder… This Year Next Year (and if applicable) Chemistry If you’re solid at math. Chem Pre-Req Sciences (AP Bio, AP Chem) Biology & Earth Systems Upper Level Sciences (AP Environmental Science, Physics College Geology, AP Physics) Physical Science Other Science Electives (can be taken at the same time – some have pre-requisites) (Oceanography, Marine Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Robotics, Sports Medicine, Animal or Plant Science, etc.)

10 Chemistry, one more time…
YES!! Reasons to take Chemistry: Goal – highly competitive college Goal - health/med fields You want to take AP Bio or AP Chem No. Reasons people may put off (not take) Chemistry (next yr) Math…need to be taking (already took) Adv Alg aka Algebra 2 Don’t need it for your future (major) More interested in Physics

11 Looking for a challenge next year? …or might you be
a future Science MAJOR in college? …or perhaps you’d prefer to get your college science courses out of the way BEFORE college?

12 “College in the High School”
AP Environmental Sci (aka APES) A college semester in one year …for non-science majors…or… No AP test…earn a “C” and get 5 CWU credits or CWU Geology Not MATH-intensive but require considerable out-of-class reading

13 Consider costs as well… NO guarantee of “credit”
CWU Geology costs $275 but you can earn 5 college credits valued at $1000!! ($200/credit in 2018) Consider costs as well… AP tests cost $90+ with NO guarantee of “credit”

14 I like engineering, design, ROBOT WARZ!!!!
ROBOTICS CAN CROSS TWO GRADUATION CREDITS OFF YOUR LIST!!! Besides science it can be a math credit or… But there are other options… some less math-intensive… This class has NOTHING!!!!! to do with Robotics Club!!!! I like medical topics Project Lead the Way Ocean Sciences, like… I like the ocean Oceanography Marine Biology I like engineering, design, ROBOT WARZ!!!! or Robotics!!

15 Oh…and of course… there’s
So…it all comes back to where we started… What are your goals? Oh…and of course… there’s always Running Start!

16 Not sure which way to go I’ll be happy to chat with you.

17 what each science class actually teaches?
Want to know more about what each science class actually teaches? Check our our virtual Course Catalog (power points) …or Ask Me (power hour A)?
