SCIENCE GRADE FIVE-HUMAN BODY-NERVOUS SYSTEM/SENSES Nervous System Cells Ears Vocabulary: All K-4 process vocabulary plus: Chart (verb) Conduct Control (variables) Investigation Cell Cornea Iris Lens Microscope Optic nerve Optical Organ Organism Pupil Response Retina Senses Stimuli System Telescope Tissue Basic Needs Respiratory System Human Body Body Systems Senses Absorption and Reflection of Light Sight Essential Understandings: The five senses receive information from the environment, which is carried to the brain by nerve cells The brain, nerves and spinal column are part of the nervous system Some organisms are made of one cell, some of a few cells, and some are made of many cells All organisms have basic needs There are 10 body systems with specific jobs that work together to keep a person alive The body systems are: circulatory, respiratory, reproductive, digestive, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, excretory and integumentary When light shines on an object, some of the light is absorbed and some is reflected The light that is reflected from an object is the color we see Sight is accomplished through a connection between the eyes and the brain; there are special parts of the eye with specific functions The sense of touch is regulated by the skin The ears receive vibrations that are sent to the brain and interpreted as sound The respiratory system provides the body with a mechanism for inputting oxygen and discharging carbon dioxide Technology enables people to discover more about their world
