Read and complete analysis chart of “You Have Insulted Me”: A Letter (page 189) Complete the TDQs independently 1. In what ways does Vonnegut utilize rhetorical devices to advance his claim? 2. What is the mood of the letter? In what ways does Vonnegut employ figurative language to create the mood? 3. How effective is Vonnegut’s letter? Pretend that you are a member of the school board he is writing to. Write a letter in response to Vonnegut stating whether you plan to lift the ban or to continue with it.

2 Introduction Innocent of hubris or guilty of crimes against the gods?  To which verdict is Creon destined?  In order to find out, you are embarking on a journey through the tragic world of Antigone.  The Princess of Thebes has broken a law created by her uncle, King Creon.  As a result of a series of tragic events, Creon's loved ones pass on to the afterlife, leaving him to suffer in this life.   It is your job to hold a criminal trial for Creon and determine his guilt or innocence.  Attorney for the defense or the prosecution?  Member of the jury?  Witness?  Regardless of your role, you will play an integral part in deciding Creon's fate.

3 To accomplish the task, you will be assigned a role (see below) and will then follow the steps associated with your role. Roles Creon Defense team Prosecution team Ismene Sentry Teiresias Choragos Jury member, i.e. one of the principle Olympian gods or goddesses

4 Defense Team (2 people) It is your job to develop a plan of defense for Creon.  His life is in your hands.  In order to accomplish this, you will need to do the following: Create masks that accurately represent your roles (these will be worn during the trial) Research courtroom procedure in conjunction with the defense team Create an opening and closing argument of one page in length (for each).  This argument should focus on why Creon is innocent of crimes against democracy.  Be sure to use evidence from the play to support your points.  Create a list of witnesses in the order in which each will be called Create a list of questions to ask each witness (with the answers you want to receive, citing evidence from the play)

5 Defendant: Creon You are the defendant.  Your people have decided that you are a tyrant who is to be tried for crimes against democracy.  While awaiting trial, you will be expected to do the following:  Create a mask that accurately represents your character (this will be worn during the trial) Gain an understanding of the Greeks' view of democracy by researching the political structure of ancient Greece (be sure to include information on the role of kings in their government structures). Prepare a defense statement for yourself.  Why were you within your rights when acting against Antigone? Be sure to use specific support from the play to enhance your argument. Work with the defense to prepare for their questions and develop a plan to anticipate which questions the prosecution will ask you and how you will address them.

6 Prosecution Team (2 people)
It is your duty to develop a plan of attack for prosecuting Creon.  Your stance is that he is guilty of tyranny and crimes against democracy. To insure justice is served, you will need to do the following:  Create masks that accurately represent your roles (these will be worn during the trial) Research courtroom procedure in conjunction with the prosecution team Create an opening and closing argument of one page in length (for each). This argument should focus on why Creon is guilty of crimes against democracy.  Be sure to use evidence from the play to support your points. Create a list of witnesses in the order in which each will be called Create a list of questions to ask each witness (with the answers you want to receive, citing evidence from the play)

7 Witnesses Your role is to speak the truth as you see it in relation to Creon's behavior and actions.  You will do the following to prepare for your time on the stand: Create a mask that accurately represents your character (this will be worn during the trial).  Prepare a 1 page affidavit explaining whether, from your character’s perspective, Creon is innocent or guilty, citing evidence from the play. Prepare yourself by develop a plan to anticipate which questions the attorneys from each side will ask you and how you will address them.

9 Jury You are the members of the jury. The jury consists of the Olympian gods and goddesses. Therefore, your job will be to research yourselves. Who are you? What is your role in Greek mythology? This research will be integrated into a 1-2 page juror response and verdict. In your verdict, reference at least two myths that you are involved in as support for your decision. Before the trial begins, you will give a brief introduction of who you are and what biases you have for/against women, obedience to laws, love for family, and/or death.
