As a group select two religions from Islam, Christianity, and Judaism and list their similarities and differences. Use the worksheet from the video clip to help you!

8 Geography Islam began in present day Saudi Arabia
Most of the Middle East is desert Which means farming isn’t a big deal However, trading is Trade centers popped up and one of these towns was called Mecca

9 Prophet Muhammad Began life as a merchant in the town of Mecca
Was meditating in a cave about the moral ills of society and idol worship Was approached by the angel Gabriel calling him to be the messenger of God Became first convert to Islam – “Submission” Submit to God’s will Asked Arabs to give up false gods and submit to one true God

10 Hijra Journey taken by Muhammad and followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 A.D. Had to flea from Mecca Teachings not initially received Within Medina became very popular as a prophet, ruler, and lawgiver. Later triumphantly returned to Mecca and destroyed all the idols within the city. Muhammad died in the year 632 A.D.

Monotheistic God is all powerful and compassionate as told in the Quran (Koran, Qu’an) Guide to ethics: generosity, honesty, social justice Similar to Christianity that a person stands before judgment for either heaven or hell Their name for God is Allah.

Trading goods became the most important business. Gold and Salt were the two main items traded. Trading and farming allowed people to settle in Africa. Trading and farming are the two main factors that caused growth in Africa

35 Ghana Economics: Muslim merchants made money on gold.
Political: Government was lead by a king. He was respected by the people. He established justice and kept laws. Social: Muslims migrated into this area. The king employed many Muslims. They king adopted the Muslim military, technology, writing, coinage, and architecture. In time, many Ghanan’s converted to Islam.

36 Mali Economics: Prospered due to the trade of gold and salt. Political: Government led by a king. Most famous king was Mansa Musa. He was king for 25 years. He converted to Islam. His justice system was based on the teachings of the Koran. Social: Adopted Muslim teachings. Became allies with other Islamic countries.

37 Songhai Economics: Trade was the main source of income.
Political: Powerful King Sonni Alli. He used the army to create the largest state that had ever existed in Africa. King Askia Muhammad took over after Alli’s death. He converted to Islam. He created 3 departments in the government: Farming Army. 3 Treasury. Social: Built mosques, and opened schools to study the Koran.

Began to trade with Asia. Asia gained: Ivory, leopard skins, iron, copper, and gold. Africa gained: cotton cloth, silk, spices, porcelain, glassware and swords. When they began to trade with other countries, a mix and blend of different cultures happened due to interracial marriages. Created new languages. Pg. 291

45 South Africa Economics: Trade was very important. Mainly traded gold. Trade stretched to the Indian Ocean. Political: Ruled by a god-king and a queen mother. They had governors who had authority and power in most of the villages. Social: Mostly farming communites.

52 Medieval Japan Political: Military rulers called shoguns. The shoguns gave land to lords called daimyo. The daimyo gave the land to the warriors called samurai. Economic: Agriculture improved. Farmers used new seeds and tools to grow more food. Population of Japan grew. Towns were linked by roads and trade increased. Religious: A form of Buddhism, called Zen spread through Japan. Zen Buddhists taught peace, simple living, nature and beauty. Cultural: Art and Theater. In kabuki theaters, actors wore colorful costumes and acted out stories about families or events in history. Chinese missionaries brought Buddhism to Korea. Koreans also adopted Chinese arts and learning. Koreans adopted Confucian ideas, including that the family was the most important part of society. Koreans also adopted the Chinese Civil Service System: Take test, highest scores work for the government.
