1 Okefenokee Swamp

2 1-Marsh / Swamp Habitat The Okefenokee Swamp, located in southeast Georgia and northeast Florida, is one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the world. Okefenokee comes from the Indian word which means “Land of the Trembling Earth”

3 2-Marsh / Swamp Habitat Not all of the Okefenokee is a swamp. Part of it is a bog which is a mossy wetland. It is so boggy that you can shake trees by stomping on the ground!

Trees include giant tupelos and bald cypresses. Tupelo Trees Cypress Trees

5 4-Marsh / Swamp Habitat Plants
Bladderworts live in shallow water and have small air sacs that catch small bugs, water fleas, and worms. Pitcher Plants eat live bugs! The bugs are attracted to the smell and they crawl inside. Once inside, they are trapped. The flower has strong chemicals that immediately dissolve the bug. The Sundew flower has sticky stuff on the plant. When bugs land, they are stuck. Then the flower can eat the bug.

6 5-Marsh and Swamp Habitat Land Animals
White tailed deer eat only plants. The raccoon eats plants and animals. The black bear eats plants and animals.

7 6-Marsh and Swamp Habitat Water Animals
River Otters eat a lot. They catch prey with their teeth. Water Moccasin One of Georgia’s few venomous snakes. It can coil, bite, and coil again in ½ second! Did you know a full grown alligator can grow up to 15 feet and weigh 700 pounds?

8 7-Swamp and Marsh Habitat Birds
Sandhill Cranes Ospreys The Anhinga These birds feed on small prey such as lizards, rats, and snakes.

9 8-Swamp and Marsh Birds An egret catches its food by spearing
it with its sharp bill!

10 9-Did You Know? In 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt helped establish the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.
