18 WHY DID WE USE THE ATOMIC BOMBS ON JAPAN?
Desire for revenge: The Unites States was humiliated at Pearl Harbor . In addition we lost hundreds of thousands of men in the war against the Japanese. (approx 300,000) End the war and save American & Japanese lives: The Japanese refusal to surrender and the cost of the war forced Truman to plan an invasion of the Japanese mainland. Such an invasion would have cost approximately a million American lives and millions of Japanese due to civilian preparation for the invasion.

19 3. $2 Billion Investment in the Manhattan Project: The Manhattan project took over 3 years and cost an estimated $2 billion dollars. The price and the successful results of the Trinity test forced Truman to use the bomb on the enemy. If he had not done so, most historians believe he would have been impeached. 4. Stop the Spread of the Soviet Union & Communism: With the defeat of Germany the Soviet Union was positioned to dominate Eastern Europe and spread communism into China, Korea and ultimately Japan. The use of the atomic bombs curtailed Stalin’s plans to spread communism around the world.
