Children are like kites. You spend a lifetime trying
to get them off the ground. You run with them until you’re both breathless – they crash – you add a longer tail – they hit the rooftop – you pluck them out of the spout – you patch and comfort, adjust and teach. You watch them lifted by the wind and assure them that someday they’ll fly! …Finally they are airborne, but they need more string and you keep letting it out and with each twist of the ball of twine, there is a sadness that goes with the joy because the kite becomes more distant and somehow you know that it won’t be long before that beautiful creature will snap the life line that bound you together and soar as it was meant to soar - - free and alone.

Department of Greek Studies
The World Language Essential Standards and the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Language have developed a comprehensive set of language skills to be used for effective communication. These skills are based on Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. We follow the NC World Language Standards and the Ellinomatheia standards (specific to Greek Language proficiency) In order to measure language proficiency students have a “linguafolio.” A portfolio that keeps track of the student’s progress in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

K-8 uses the “ Ta ellinika mou “ books which are based on the same standards mentioned above. Students have the opportunity to earn up to 3 high school credits by successful completion of 6-8 grade Greek classes. As a Partial Immersion program, math is delivered in Greek and in English. Math in Greek teachers follow the NC Common Core Math Standards, but the material is delivered in the Greek Language.
