14 Assignment Practicing Social Studies Skills
Complete all of the questions on the sheet using your textbook. For the last two questions, you DO NOT have to include all of the themes. Just come up with at least two examples of how themes in history are present in the assigned portion of reading.

Get out your Success/Failure sheet. Who did you mark down as being a success? Failure?

The following activities you will complete with two other group members.

19 Coding Text Read the article “Black Blizzard”
Use the Coding Text sheet that is in your packet. As you read through the material use these “codes” to assist you through your reading. We will go through each code to see how this applies to the text.

20 Vocabulary Self-Awareness
This template will be used when we discuss some of the content vocabulary terms. Without writing on the template, use the diagram with the following words: Natural disaster, migration, drought, mortgage, depression, resent

21 Graphic Organizer Using the template as an example, use the word “migrate” to complete this activity.

22 Frayer Model Using the template as an example, complete the Frayer Model using the word “depression”.

23 Say Something Chart Now that you have read over “Black Blizzard” – with your partners you will fill out the chart. Follow the directions at the bottom of the page.

24 Click and Clunk Chart After reading “Black Blizzard” write down things that “clicked” or made sense – and things that “clunked” or did not make sense after you read the story.

25 Thick and Thin Review After reading “Black Blizzard”, create review questions as if you were preparing for a quiz or a test.

Once you are divided into groups you will be given an activity to complete based on the reading that you were given.

Read over the article “Rare Earthquake Shakes and Shocks Eastern Seaboard”. Once you are finished reading this article, fill in the boxes on the current events sheet.

32 Position Paper This is intended to provide the reader with a good idea as to the beliefs of the writer. Support your position with facts and not minute details.

33 Position Paper - For 12 minutes…
Read over the article “Some US jobs aren’t coming back”. After reading the article, form an opinion based on the following statement: The United States economy is doomed and is unlikely to return to a stable position. OR What is the best movie you have seen? Why?

34 Biography A biography is intended to provide you with a picture of who the person is DO write about… The influence they had on history Relevant information pertaining to their influence DO NOT write about… Where they were born What they did growing up

35 Biography – For 12 minutes
Read over the biography of Winston Churchill. Based on the information provided, write a two paragraph biography about Winston Churchill.

36 Summarizing State the author’s most important idea Use your own words
Go over important points that support the main idea Present the ideas in order

37 Summarizing – For 5 minutes…
Read over pages 4 and 5 in your textbook and work as a group to write a one paragraph summary over these pages.
