1 Lesson Starter: place in order from most to least reactive
Potassium Gold Hydrogen Lead Zinc Silver Lithium Aluminium

2 To be able to explain what happens during a displacement reaction
Learning Intention To be able to explain what happens during a displacement reaction

3 Reactivity series The reactivity series acts as a ‘league table’ showing which metals are more reactive and therefore will displace another in a reaction.

4 Displacement During a displacement reaction the metal in a compound is replaced with a more reactive metal to form a new compound. Zinc Copper Sulfate

5 Model 1 Like people compounds find some partners more attractive than others, and will ‘ditch’ one metal for another.

6 Worked examples Magnesium metal + Copper Sulphate solution-
Lithium metal + Sodium Chloride solution- Zinc metal + Lithium Sulphate solution-

7 Over to you.. PREDICT of a displacement reaction will occur and get them checked Try out a few of the reactions Half fill the test tube with the solution stated and then add the metal stated. Note any observations in your jotter

8 Written Examples Magnesium + Potassium Sulphate-
Lithium + Iron Nitrate- Lithium + Aluminium Sulphate-
