1 About the farmer Name : Mayanglambam Ibechaobi Leima Maiden name : Shamjetshabam Ibechaobi Leima Age : District : Thoubal State : Manipur Land holding : 2 hectares Crop nominated : Black Rice, Bitter gourd, Cucumber, Water Melon,Pumpkin

2 Education Details – Matric: 1991 BA in Arts (Geography): 1996 Farming Profile Years in Farming – 14 years Crops grown – Black Rice, Cucumber, Watermelon, Garden pea, Cabbage, Bottle gourd, Ridge gourd, Tomato, Potato, Coriander, Carrot, Banana, Sougri angangba

3 Achievement of the farmer
Best women farmer of Thoubal district, Manipur Successful Lady Agrientrepreneur of Manipur Key person to introduce small scale agro produce processing in her village Does value addition to her farm produce by processing of black rice into Cake, Bhujia, Cookies, Rasgulla, Laddu and sells at higher market price Coordinator & Treasure of “Integrated Farmers Club, Umathel” Role model, Motivator & Facilitator for other lady farmers of North-Eastern region Actively participate & organizes agriculture technology dissemination activities with help of Agriculture department & SHG’s of Manipur Successful Mushroom grower of her locality. Promoter of organic farming in her locality (Vermicompost)

4 New Practice Details New Practice
Source (Self/Adopted ) Adopted from KVK, Thoubal About new practice To increase the income started Value addition by processing of harvested black rice into Byproducts like – Cake, Cookies, Laddu, Rasgulla, Bhujia etc. & selling through their own SHG Organic Black Rice production by SRI (Seed rate-2 kg/acre & manuring-FYM 6t/acre) by transplanting 12 days old seedlings at Spacing-20 X 20 cm Weeding-using cono weeder starting at 10 DAT and 20 DAT Water management- intermittent drying and wetting during vegetative stage Cultivated high value vegetable crops during winter season on same piece of land Adopted Pisciculture with duck rearing in pond for additional & round the year income Also doing piggery, goatery, cow rearing & Mushroom production Cultivated fruit plants & Bamboo on the boundaries of the farm Selling her processed food with the brand name “MAYANGLAMBAM AGRO UMATHEL” New Practice Details

5 New Practice Details Need for New Practice in selected Crop
To increase the income as not getting good return by sell of raw paddy so started to sell processed foods prepared through Black rice to get more return To reduce the cost of cultivation through seeds, labour requirement & capital engaged etc. Ecofriendly & sustainable due to less use of chemical inputs Increase yield tremendously Reduces the duration of the crop by 7-10 days thereby facilitates growing of rabi crops in time Yield increase without considering cultivar of the crop The production of the field was only for own consumption, not for commercial production, with very low yield

6 Previous Practice Selling the black rice raw without processing Normal transplanting-without any spacing/ haphazard cultivation High use of chemical inputs & High cost of cultivation Yield stagnant Net income low compared to SRI method Not ecofriendly & sustainable Need new cultivar to increase yield. e.g Hybrid rice

7 Qualitative Impact New Practice Impact on Yield
Particulars Before After No. of productive tillers per hill 36 48 Panicle length ( cm ) 14 20 No. of grains per panicle 42 60 1000 grain weight ( gm ) 10 16 Yield loss due to lodging (kg/acre) 90 Impact on Yield By SRI yield increases from 1400 kg/acre to 1900 kg/acre because with SRI technique no. of productive tillers get increased upto per hill, more no. of grains/panicle, more test weight & non lodging of the crop Timely cultural practice viz.weeding at 10 DAT and 20 DAT using cono weeder helps to release the soil nutrients and gives proper aeration to the plant which increases the growth of the plant Excessive induced biological activities and aeration in the root zone has helped good vegetative growth of plants

8 Impact on Cost of cultivation
Cost of cultivation decreased from Rs /acre to Rs. 20,000/acre Seed rate reduce from 24 kg/acre to 2 kg/acre Labour cost reduces, No use of chemical inputs reduces cost of chemical inputs Less use of water due intermittent watering & drying reduces the cost of irrigation water Income get tripled after processing of Black Rice (Below table is for harvested Black Rice only) Particulars Before After Land Preparation (Rs/acre) 1100 Seeds/Acre (kg) 24 kg 2 kg Seed cost (Rs.) Rs/kg ) 100 50Rs/kg ) Vermi Compost Cost (Rs.) 4000 7200 kg/acre) Chemical Fertilizers & Pesticides 3100 - Labour cost (Rs.) 6000 4500 Bio Pesticides cost (Rs.) 1400 Weeding (Rs.) 2000 1500 Harvesting (Rs./acre) 2500 2200 Other Cost (Rs.) (Loading, Threshing, Irrigation etc.) 3000 Total Expense (Rs.) 24000 20000 Yield (Kg./acre) 1900 Price obtained (Rs./kg) 50 Gross income (Rs.) 70000 95000 Net Income (Rs.) 46000 75000

9 Other Benefits Easy for intercultural operation using rotary paddy weeder, maintaining plant density & avoiding competition for nutrient, light & air in the soil It helps to change scenario of our paddy cultivation where scanty of water Avoid use of granular pesticide or chemicals to decrease mortality % of earth worm. Sufficient area for nutrient absorption by the root. To have deep percolation of tap roots & profuse growth of the adventitious root by means of good aeration Less weed growth The effective tillers per hill were on an average Earning from straw is increased Overall, with high profit & less cost of cultivation , upliftment in our Socio economic status

10 Quantitative Impact Measurability Crop Cost of cultivation (Rs/Acre)
Yield (Kg/Acre) Average yield in the village (Kg/Acre) Increase in Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) % Previous year Current year Black rice 24000 20000 1400 1900 1200 38.94 Average Yield in Tehsil (Kg/Acre) Avg yield in State (Kg/Acre) 1200 * BCR = Yield / Cost of Cultivation *100 KVK,Thoubal,Manipur

11 Quantitative Impact Scalability Sustainability
Number of farmers followed & implemented these new practices 20 in the village Sustainability Since how long has farmer been using this new practice July,2014
