All resources devoted to the war effort WWI had far reaching effect for peoples and societies across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, North America, & Pacific Example: Indian Troops fighting for the British in the Middle East

5 War Beyond Europe Manpower and resources of imperial possessions sucked into the spreading conflict By 1915, fighting spread to Middle East, west and east Africa, China, Pacific islands & across most oceans Troops recruited from Canada, Africa, New Zealand, India, and Australia

7 Support for War British recruited women to replace farmers and factory workers who went off to war France recruited laborers from colonies in Africa and Vietnam

9 Japan British entry in war = empire and allies were brought into the conflict Naval pact (1902) – Japan Japan attacked German colonies in China & Pacific Came to be components for defense perimeter sought during WWII. Provides great force to Japan’s imperialist goal in China in 1930’s

10 Real Role for the U.S. American businesses greatly profited from the war: Selling food, raw materials, & weapons Increasing exports and huge loans to British, France and Russia: Transformed U.S. from an international debtor to the world’s largest creditor and strongest economy
