There are a lot of details and a lot of moving parts that are just simpler when you can automate all of them with online cloud storage. We’re saying here that storage costs are reduced 40-60% but some of our customers, as you will see, tell us the savings are actually a lot higher than that. 22 What will Nasuni be next?
A small niche startup 6-year-old startup Headquarters: Natick, MA First product was a gateway to AWS Backup and archive to the cloud Frequent changes in company & product direction Gateway, then Cloud Performance reporting experts, now “The Nasuni Service” company (cloud broker) Questionable sales & marketing tactics Making claims about StorSimple that are wrong: “…slow, irrelevant…” Funded by Northbridge, SIGMA+ Partners, FLYBRIDGE What will Nasuni be next? Nasuni is a six (6) year old startup. Their first product to market was a “cloud gateway” type product. The Nasuni playbook was to demonstrate to users that they could lower the cost of backing up data by sending data to the cloud rather than to costly and unreliable backup tapes and then those tapes to offsite storage locations. Over the company’s history they have worn many hats; while still selling their gateway product, and to enhance their visibility into the market place, Nasuni started testing and reporting on the performance and reliability of various cloud providers such as Microsoft, AWS, Google, AT&T and more. The Nasuni cloud reports were a way for the company to stay in the enterprise spotlight while it figured out its next move. Nasuni has used questionable sales tactics such as threatening cloud providers to work with them, or else! With the or else being that Nasuni would intentionally steer a customer to one cloud provider over another if the first cloud provider refused to participate in a Nasuni sale to the user. Investors in Nasuni include Northbridge, Sigma + Partners, FLYBRIDGE among others. The company’s latest move is “The Nasuni Service” which is essentially a passive “collaboration-” cloud gateway solution that on the surface looks appealing, however we believe there are hidden costs and potentially availability exposures inherent in their deployments. In upcoming slides we will look at their “Nasuni Service” (file sharing, locking and synching enabled in their Nasuni 6.0 code release).

23 What does Nasuni sell: File sharing
Via The Nasuni Service (enabled by code release 6.0) Global, shared, file system with file-locking capability File-locking prevents users from updating files that are currently being worked on by another user at any location Gold copy of files are placed in the cloud (i.e. Azure, AWS) Local appliance policies can be set for Gold Copy access Passive file collaboration Locking and file management at Storage layer vs. StorSimple ‘active’ file collaboration’ approach Hardware Nasuni Filer NAS file server + gateway device for access to Azure & AWX Professional services Complex set up - Nasuni includes PS in every deal. Also available are cloud-to-cloud data migration services (bulk and targeted App data) and DR architecture, planning and testing services

Industry Analysts Data availability concern: Most remote locations use non-HA Nasuni Filers Deploying HA increases cost The Nasuni Service essentially holds files in Nasuni Filer cache at local or branch offices while files are being worked on. A Nasuni file locking technique keeps files from being accidentally accessed and changed while a file is in use. Once a user is finished with a file, a Gold Copy (a.k.a. master copy) of the file is sent to the cloud (Azure, AWS, etc.) where it will remain. Other local Filers in disparate locations can be set by policy to: Not be notified of a new Gold Copy Be notified of a new Gold Copy Download a copy of the new Gold copy automatically every time a Gold copy is created Download a copy of the new Gold copy only the file is requested for use We believe this type of collaboration is a passive file collaboration technique given that it is deployed at the storage layer and applications will not easily be able to leverage it vs. a collaboration deployment with StorSimple, where file control is much closer to the Application layer and simple and faster modifications can be made to leverage the technology to the customers business advantage. We see Nasuni’s implementation as a mid-tier approach whereas our solution with our trusted partners is a more enterprise wide approach. From a high availability perspective, StorSimple ships with a dual controller configuration vs. a Nasuni Filer single controller solution. We see this as a real HA concern given that many local and branch sites can be remote - and with a single controller outages will be extended and repair times lengthened.

26 How Nasuni has won some deals
Deals where we have no visibility & Azure Storage was part of the deal Aggressive & proactive participation in the Microsoft Partner Program Leveraging every opportunity to work with Partner & BDM Managers Threats: “Go with us (Nasuni) or we will take the deal to AWS!” Nasuni will threaten sellers that if they don’t support Nasuni in the deal, Nasuni will take the cloud storage business to AWS. Direct ing of misleading Nasuni infographics to DC sellers & BDMs New BG StorSimple infographic illustrates strong StorSimple value prop, how to win, and how to quickly retire Azure quota with StorSimple Claims that StorSimple cannot provide file-locking capability This is not true! 30 Objection handling 1 2 3 4 5 StorSimple cannot be used for backup.
9/18/2018 StorSimple cannot be used for backup. StorSimple is not a backup target, it does not emulate tape and does not need backup software in order to generate or create backup data. StorSimple is primary storage where servers can store data and use cloud snapshots as the mechanism for helping protect data in the cloud. With cloud snapshots, backups are done very efficiently while minimizing the overall storage footprint Eliminates tapes for archive and Disaster Recovery (DR) and can dramatically improve Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) StorSimple is not ‘file aware’ so an individual file or directory can be restored. Inaccurate! When a snapshot is restored the reference blocks associated with a snapshot are rehydrated in the form of a volume and one or more files can be restored There is no regeneration of duplicate data or duplication of space “StorSimple cannot support file-locking.” Microsoft StorSimple, along with Talon FAST Core and Edge file management, provides an enterprise class collaboration environment that assures end-to-end data and file help protect Joint customer, Capita, located in the U.K. is a reference customer for our collaboration solution and a replay of a webinar where Capita spoke about the successful deployment of StorSimple and Talon can be viewed here: “MSFT forces customers to commit to Azure when they buy StorSimple.” Microsoft does not force any customer to purchase any of our products in any way. We have found that when a customer purchases StorSimple they begin to experience the industries easiest and fastest on-ramp to the cloud through the value that StorSimple delivers: primary storage, file sharing, archiving, support for SharePoint and SQL server Additionally, with StorSimple customers can utilize data mobility between StorSimple hybrid cloud systems located on-premises and StorSimple Virtual Arrays located within Azure for use cases that include D.R., development and test and cloud Apps. “StorSimple is irrelevant.” We beg to differ with Nasuni on their claim that StorSimple is irrelevant and we believe that +1,000 of our current customers - and the updated global customers that choose StorSimple on a daily basis as their hybrid cloud storage of choice - would agree with us too that StorSimple provides enterprise storage solutions & cloud economics. 1 2 3 4 5 © 2012 Microsoft Corporation.
