3 Enlightenment An intellectual 18th-century movement that sought to apply scientific methods to the study of society and government.

4 philosophe Any of the popular French intellectuals or social philosophers of the 18th century, as Diderot, Rousseau, or Voltaire. Philosopher: a person who offers views or theories on profound questions in ethics, metaphysics, logic, and other related fields.

5 natural rights Rights that belong to people “by nature,” simply because they are human beings.

6 absolutism A system of rule in which a monarch or other ruler enjoys unlimited power.

7 liberty Freedom

8 deism Belief in the existence of a God on the evidence of reason and nature only.
