1 Photosynthesis, Respiration and Transpiration
Objectives: Define photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration! Explain the processes/steps of photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration! Explain the significance of the processes of photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration to the survival of green plants and other organisms?!?!

2 Photosynthesis The process by which plants make food is called "photosynthesis". "photo" = light "synthesis" = putting together This happens to EVERY plant, and to some bacteria and algae, too.  Without photosynthesis, plants wouldn't exist

3 What do plants need for photosynthesis to occur?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) -Plants take in carbon dioxide through their leaves. Water (H20) -Plants use their roots to suck water up into their “bodies”. Light- Plants use the sunlight for heat, light and energy.

4

5 Process of Photosynthesis
1. Water is absorbed by the roots of green plants and is carried to the leaves by the xylem. 2. Carbon dioxide is obtained from air that enters the leaves through the stoma. 3. Plants capture sunlight using a compound called Chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is green, which is why so many plants appear green. 4. The plant makes glucose (sugar) and oxygen. - Glucose (sugar) helps the plant grow. - Oxygen goes to the air to help animals and humans breathe.

6 Respiration A process in which plants, animals, and humans take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Plants- Take in oxygen through the stoma and use it to get the energy they need to burn food. Humans and animals- Take in oxygen to help them burn digested food and get energy.

8 Photosynthesis vs. Respiration
Occurs in the presence of light (and chlorophyll in plant cells) Occurs at all times in cells Requires energy (light) to make glucose (sugar) Releases energy from glucose (sugar) Carbon dioxide and water are needed. Carbon dioxide and water are the waste products. Oxygen is given out. Oxygen is taken in.

9 Transpiration Transpiration is the flow of water through a plant.
Transpiration is essentially evaporation of water from plant leaves. Studies have revealed that about 10 percent of the moisture found in the atmosphere is released by plants through transpiration. An acre of corn gives off about 3,000-4,000 gallons (11,400-15,100 liters) of water each day, and a large oak tree can transpire 40,000 gallons (151,000 liters) per year.

10

11 Process for Transpiration
1. Plants absorb water from the soil. 2. The water moves from the roots to the stems through the xylem vessels to the leaves. 3. Once the water reaches the leaves, some of it evaporates from the leaves through the stoma. Which adds water vapor into the air. k

12 Questions to Consider:
1. Would plants and animals be able to survive if photosynthesis did not occur? Why or Why not. 2. Would plants and animals be able to survive if respiration did not occur? Why or Why not. 3. How do the processes of respiration, photosynthesis, and transpiration allow organisms to survive?
