5 motive—n. a reason for doing something
My main motive for learning Spanish is to speak with my grandmother who doesn’t speak English.

6 tractor—n. a large vehicle that moves farm equipment
We watched the tractor pull the plow across the field on the farm.

7 detract—v. to reduce the strength, value, or importance of something.
If you park that old rusty car in your front yard, it will detract from the beauty of your house.

8 contract—v. to make something shorter or smaller; to become smaller
When you flex your bicep, the muscle contracts and becomes shorter.

9 attention—n. the act or power of carefully thinking about, listening to, or watching someone or something It is important to give your full attention when you learn something new.

10 extend—v. to cause something, such as your arm or leg, to stretch out or straighten out
If you extend your arms outwards, you will feel your chest muscles stretch.

11 tension—n. the amount that something is stretched; an uneasy feeling that makes it difficult to relax After the friends argued, there was a lot of tension in the room.

12 contentious—adj. likely to cause people to argue or disagree
You will create a contentious environment if you keep bringing up controversial issues.
