1 Essential Question: How do major organ systems work together in living organisms?
Standards: S7L2d. Explain that tissues, organs, and organ systems serve the needs cells have for oxygen, food, and waste removal. S7L2e. Explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body (i.e., digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, control and coordination, and for protection from disease). Instructional Approach(s): Review the essential question and the standards aligned to the essential question.

2 Activating Strategy: Respiratory & Circulatory Activity – Have students record their at rest pulse. Then have students do jumping jacks beside their desk or outside for 2-3 minutes. After calling time have students record their pulse rate again. Ask the students to describe the activity and explain why they are breathing harder and their pulse rate is faster after the activity. Instructional Approach(s): Use the activity as an activator and ask the class or students why they are breathing harder and their pulse rate is faster. Remind students about the cellular processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. What is their purpose and what do they need to do their job? Or use the next slide

3 Activating Strategy: Look at the animated picture to the right.
What is the man doing? What is coming out of his mouth? Why? What is happening to his heart rate? Why? What is the connection between his breathing harder and his heart rate increasing? Instructional Approach(s): Use this slide in place of the previous activating slide if desired. Students should make the connection between movement, increased heart rate and increased breathing. Remind students about the cellular processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. What is their purpose and what do they need to do their job?

4 Why do Professional Football players breath pure oxygen on the sideline?
Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should tie this back to cellular respiration. What is the purpose of cellular respiration and what do cells need to conduct cellular respiration?

5 Respiratory System Instructional Approach(s): Transition slide

6 Respiratory System The role of the Respiratory System is to take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide from the body. Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the slide while the students record the role of the Respiratory System on their graphic organizer page

7 Nose/Mouth Trachea Lungs Alveoli Diaphragm
Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students label the diagram on their graphic organizer sheet Alveoli Diaphragm

8 Trachea Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record information about the Trachea on their graphic organizer sheet connects the mouth and throat to the lungs (commonly known as the windpipe)

9 Take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide as we breathe
Lungs Take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide as we breathe Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record information about the Lungs on their graphic organizer sheet

10 Where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occur in your blood
Alveoli Where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occur in your blood Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record information about the Alveoli on their graphic organizer sheet. Show the short video linked at the bottom of the slide

11 Diaphragm a large dome-shaped muscle under the lungs
diaphragm contracts downward, creating a vacuum that causes a rush of fresh air into the lungs Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record information about the Diaphragm on their graphic organizer sheet

12 Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should show the image of the organs of the Respiratory System

13 RESPIRATORY SYSTEM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPdGQ-A_yM4
Graphic Organizer Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should show the image of the organs of the Respiratory System

14 Circulatory System Role: responsible for the flow of blood, nutrients, oxygen and other gases, and hormones to and from cells Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record the role of the Circulatory System on the graphic organizer sheet.

15 Heart pumps blood through the network of arteries and veins throughout the body Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record the information about the Heart on their graphic organizer sheet

16

17 Blood Vessels Tubular structures carrying blood through the body
Like the train tracks of your body Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide

18 Types of Blood Vessels Arteries:
carry oxygen rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body (like a train loaded with goods) Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record information about the Arteries on their graphic organizer sheet.

19 Types of Blood Vessels Veins:
carry oxygen poor blood back to the heart (like a train carrying trash away) The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record information about the Veins on their graphic organizer sheet.

20 Types of Blood Vessels Capillaries
small blood vessels that exchange materials (oxygen, carbon dioxide, waste, glucose) with tissues in the body Where the Train drops its load The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record information about the Capillaries on their graphic organizer sheet.
