3 1. About the Author: John Steinbeck
Born in Salinas, California His books are set in California and deal with problems of working people. Characters in his books are immigrants from Mexico or from other parts of the U.S. who went to CA looking for work or a better life (The American Dream).

deepest economic depression the nation had ever known. It lasted until 1939. Effects: business bankruptcies, bank closings, farm foreclosures, and massive unemployment.

8 Dust Bowl- Tons of topsoil were blown off barren fields and carried in storm clouds for hundreds of miles

9 Many lost their farms because they could not produce any crops.
People decided to abandon their farms and go in search of work.

10 3. Migrant Farm Workers farm worker/Harvester= someone who gathers a crop People, especially men, traveled the countryside harvesting crops. The main characters, George and Lennie, are migrant farm workers.

Begin reading Ch. 2 out loud. Skip the language. Pay attention to the discussion questions and answer them as you go along. Think about the plot and setting, as well.

How have Curley’s wife’s dreams for her life changed or been lost? How has the main event of the chapter been foreshadowed throughout the novel? How does Candy react to this event, and why is that his reaction?

31 Chapter Six Questions What is the significance of the rabbit appearing at the end of the book? Is George justified in his actions? Why? Explain what happens to the dream at the end of the novel for both Lennie and George.

33 What event foreshadowed the illing of Curley’s wife and the killing of Lennie?

34 Foreshadowing Hints an author gives if what might happen later in the story.

35 Lennie’s Death Foreshadowing Explanation When staring at a face card, Lennie asks, “George, why is both ends the same George” (55)? The idea that both ends are the same explains the circle plot in which Lennie will go back to the river where he was with George in the beginning. George told him to go back there if he got in trouble.

36 Foreshadowing Using the foreshadowing sheet, work with your group (I will tell you who your groups members are) to find other examples to completely fill out your sheet. Be sure to give page numbers!
