1 Elements and Compounds
Date Title Page # Elements and Compounds Success Criteria: I will be able to decompose water by electrolysis into the two elements from which it is composed. Warm – Up: What did we do in the electrolysis experiment ?? (write your answer in your science notebook)

2

3 Physical Properties: Physical properties are those that are measurable and describe the state of physical system. Some physical properties are: Color Transparency Density Length Volume Mass Solubility Temperature Flammability Etc.

6 Zn + 2 HCl > ZnCl2 + H2

7 Special Effects With Hydrogen
Hydrogen molecules and Oxygen molecules have a much lower energy state when combined as H2O (water) than the total energy when they are separate molecules of hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2). So, with the addition of heat, the gasses will react (violently) to make water and give off heat. How can we use this fact in our production of special effects? CAREFULLY measure 10 mL of 1M HCl (hydrochloric acid!) into a erlenmeyer flask Add .1 g of magnesium. Place a balloon over the top of the flask and gently swirl the flask as the balloon fills. Tie off the balloon and tape it to the end of a meter stick. Wait until the class is ready. Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq)  MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)

8 Chem Talk: Elements and Compounds
Date Title Page # Chem Talk: Elements and Compounds Success Criteria: I will be able to define and apply 4 terms to my understanding of chemistry (element, compound, chemical formula, conservation of mass). Warm – Up: Open the Active Chemistry textbook to page Label your science notebook “Chem Talk” and begin reading.

9 Guided Reading In your science notebook, neatly answer 18 questions as you read the CHEM TALK for Ch1 Section 1.

10 Elements Compounds 2 or more substances Atoms Matter = Material Stuff
Mixtures Can be 2 or more substances Compounds Elements Can be Made of Atoms Made of one kind of Made of 2+ kinds of

11 Element vs Compound An element is any material that cannot be broken down into simpler materials by chemical means. A compound is a substance that consists of two or more elements bonded together in definite proportions Draw the following table in your notebook, Title it Element vs. Compound Formula Element or Compound? Names of all elements present Number of atoms of each element present Total number of atoms present

12 Names of all elements present Number of atoms of each element present

13 Chemical Formulas and Conservation of Mass
Chemical formulas are the combination of the symbols of the elements in a definite proportion used to represent molecules, compounds, radicals, ions, etc. Conservation of Mass states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed in a reaction (so, the NUMBER of atoms of each type of element must be equal on both sides of a chemical equation) In chemical equations we use (s) to represent solid, (aq) to represent aqueous, (l) to represent liquid, and (g) to represent gas

14 Date Title Page # Chem Essential Questions: Elements and Compounds Success Criteria: I will be able SUMMARIZE my understanding about elements and compounds by answering the chem. essential questions. Warm – Up: Answer the “What do you think now?” questions in your science notebook

15

16 Essential Question Protocol
You will have 2 minutes to INDEPENDENTLY and SILENTLY write your answer to the question. You will have 4 minutes to share your answer to the question with your small group and ADD to your answer. We will have 1 minute to share as a class. Essential Question Protocol We will spend a total of 28 minutes answering these questions.

17 What does it mean? MACRO NANO SYMBOLIC
During the decomposition of water we observed… During the electrolysis of water, the H20 compound was… During the reaction between zinc and hydrochloric acid, … 2H2O  2H2 + O2 …bubbles forming at the two electrodes. Twice as much gas was produced in one tube compared to the other. The flame test popped for the hydrogen and relit for the oxygen. … breaking into elemental hydrogen gas and elemental oxygen gas. … zinc chloride was being produced and hydrogen gas released to fill up the balloon.

18 How do you know? What evidence do you have that water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen? The electrolysis of water produced one gas which popped with the flame test (hydrogen) and one gas which relit a glowing splint (oxygen).

19 Why do you believe? Create an analogy that is true from your life to show how a compound can behave differently from its parts. In my experience, a school full of teenagers is much different than any individual would act alone.

20 Why should you care? Write a short scene for your challenge for this unit. Write a short scene using a BALLOON explosion and describe how the hydrogen was generated. The scene is all you. You must describe how hydrochloric acid + zinc, hydrochloric acid + magnesium, or electrolysis of water is used to generate hydrogen gas.

21 Your eyes are only on your own paper.
Quiz! You are silent. Your eyes are only on your own paper. You may NOT use your notebook or your notes for this quiz. You are trying your best!
