SAP Definitions
Client/Server Architecture (3 tier: Presentation, Application, Database)
SAP Instance: Group of R/3 components that offer 1 or more services that are stopped or started together
Oracle Instance (SID) = SAP System Identifier
SAP Client (Mandant): Legally and organizationally independent units within a corporation (sets of companies)

Transaction: Sequence of related steps that allows users to change the database

Work Process
Dispatcher: Manages resources on SAP system - controls user queue (1 per SAP instance)
Dialog: Communication and interface with end user
Background: Batch processes
Spool: Formats data for printing
Enqueue: Manages locks so updates to DB can happen in synchronized manner even though physically it is asynchronous
Update: Executes changes to data base (Add, Change, Delete)
Message Server: Exchanges data, routes internal messages
Gateway Server: Exchanges large amounts of data between application servers (not applicable to our landscape)

Relation Of Oracle, Operating System & SAP
SAP Runs On Top of an RDBMS
In Our Case the RDBMS is Oracle
SAP Saves Data, Programs, Screens and Just About Everything Else In Oracle
SAP Modifies Data That It Stores in Oracle & Also Has Its Own Set of Tools to Manage the Database
Oracle runs on top of OS (UNIX) which manages files for Oracle
SAP Work Processes pass data to Oracle tools which call UNIX processes in order to update the database
