DO NOW What do you know about this?

KEY ASSUMPTION: unconscious processes, of which we are unaware, determine our thinking, behaviour and feelings Freud said whenever we make a choice or decision in our lives hidden mental processes of which we are UNAWARE and have NO CONTROL determine these choices Free will = a delusion, we are not entirely aware of what we are thinking
8
KEY ASSUMPTION: unconscious processes, of which we are unaware, determine our thinking, behaviour and feelings We are DIRECTLY AWARE of our thoughts and feelings e.g. ___________________________ Here, lie our thoughts, feelings and experiences which we are not directly aware of but which can be accessed easily e.g. What date is your birthday? Contains instincts (biological), drives and desires that we are not aware of but which have a strong influence on behaviour. Also contains memories from early childhood, some of which are traumatic or upsetting and have been repressed.
9
MINI PLENARY – where are you up to so far?
PLANNERS OUT FOR A MULTIPLE CHOICE QUIZ ON YOUR LEARNING SO FAR!! A) B) C) D)
10
1. What role does the unconscious mind play in behaviour?
It ONLY stores disturbing memories from childhood It is a place ONLY for biological drives to be kept It stores disturbing memories from childhood AND biological drives It stores information such as when is your birthday
11
2. This is the part of the mind of which we are directly aware
Preconscious Conscious Unconcious ID
12
How hungry you are right now Your home address
3. Which of the following is the type of information which might be stored in your preconscious mind How hungry you are right now Your home address Experiences between birth and age 2 The feel of your feet on the floor
13
4. Why does Freud use the analogy of an iceberg?
What’s an analogy? Because he was from Iceland Because it represents the mind in a way that shows we are unaware of the majority of it, like an iceberg on that film Titanic Because he wanted to show that we are only aware of a very small part of our mind
14
5. Psychodynamic theorists believe free will is a delusion, why?
Because the conscious mind controls what we do Because we are not entirely aware of what we are thinking (because a large part of it is unconscious) They didn’t say that Because the preconscious mind controls what we do
15

Introduction
17
Miss Earl’s example….. ID: Eat the entire chocolate cake eat it all!
SUPEREGO: Think of how much you will ruin your diet, you should definitely not have any EGO: Maybe you could have one slice, that wouldn’t ruin your diet too much… THINK OF YOUR OWN!
18
Defence Mechanisms On your sheets you have definitions of each of the defence mechanisms as well as some examples You have to decide, with explanation, which example is which defence mechanism There are some extension examples should you finish
19
Extension Scenarios Can you think of your own example of a defence mechanism? A person who is very aggressive may take up kickboxing A woman is the victim of domestic violence she takes her hurt and anger out on her children by hitting them as ‘punishment’ for something minor Kickboxing: sublimation, domestic violence: rationalisation
20
Sublimation Scenarios: Feedback
A person with the urge to kill others may join the army Sublimation
21
Denial Scenarios: Feedback
In war, a mother receives word that her Son has been killed, and yet refuses to believe it, still setting the table for him, keeping his room and clothes the same Denial
22
Denial Scenarios: Feedback
A student sees that he has a poor grade in his school report but tells himself it doesn’t matter Denial
23
Displacement Scenarios: Feedback
Joe is upset about his grade on his test because he feels like the teacher did not make it fair, Joe goes home and snaps at his mum Displacement
24
Rationalisation Scenarios: Feedback
Eric is an alcoholic and drinks red wine. However, he tells himself that he drinks it as it has health benefits, in order to avoid facing his alcoholism Rationalisation
25
Sublimation Scenarios: Feedback
A person who has sexual impulses they do not want to act upon may turn this into creative energy Sublimation
26
Plenary Think of a 3 mark question (and answer!) to test knowledge of what you have learnt about today: A definition of a key term? A scenario?
