1 Comparative Survival Study Project #199602000
Delayed Mortality Workshop Feb 10, 2004 Bonneville Hot Springs Resort, WA FPC, IDFG,ODFW, CRITFC, WDFW, and USFWS

2 Background Study initiated in 1996 by states, tribes ,& FWS to estimate survival rates at various life stages Compare survival rates for chinook from 3 areas Develop a more representative control for transport evaluations CSS information derived from PIT tags

3 The CSS is a joint project of the state, tribal fishery managers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service

6 Bootstrapped Survival Estimates
PITtag detection history Summarize into Burnham tabulature calculate survivals and detection prob In - river survivals and detection prob. Use detection history and detection prob. to estimate total arrival at LGR dam LGR arrival number Tally number first detected at each project and divide by survival to each project Number of fish detected in LGR equivalents LGR arrival minus sum of all first detects in LGR equiv. Number uncollected Total number of adults arriving at BON from total number of smolt for most representative of in river and transport detections in LGR equiv. BON SAR for in river and transport groups Divide LGR BON transport SAR by BON BON in river SAR Estimate of T/C Mulitply T/C by ratio of LGR river survival to LGR BON transport survival Estimate of D rel_date river_km rel_site tag_id 5/11/94 17:10 SNAKER 7F7D41315C 6/1/94 15:49 SNAKER 1F 1F 1F - Repeat 1000x to create confidence intervals Create a new sample drawing at random with replacement from original data

10 What does CSS project provide?
Long term consistent indices: Travel Times In-river Survival Rates In-river SARs by route of passage Transport SARs Comparisons of SARs Transport to In-River By geographic location By hatchery group Hatchery to Wild Chinook to Steelhead

11 Future Tasks Steelhead Marking
Increased Wild marking for Snake and Lower Columbia chinook Marking subyearling chinook in Snake and Mid-Columbia Upper Columbia chinook and steelhead marking
