2 “To enhance the success of women in the construction industry”
Core Purpose: “To enhance the success of women in the construction industry” Core Values: Believe in ourselves. Persevere with the strength of our convictions. Dare to move into new horizons. NAWIC Pledge: “As material for the construction of our building, I pledge the agility of my hands, the ability of my mind, and the integrity of my heart.” Alice Ashley Founding member of Women in Construction of Fort Worth 1953 Good morning and welcome! NAWIC 101 embodies our core purpose: “To enhance the success of women in the construction industry”. My hope is the information you will learn today will help you realize more value from your membership, give you a better understanding of how we operate, and know how and where to get involved.

3 NAWIC Region Map & Chapters
NAWIC was organized in Fort Worth in 1953 by 16 women. In a male-dominated career, these women recognized the value in a support network. Since those original 16 women, NAWIC has grown to more than 4,000 members with more than 120 chapters and more in the forming stages. NAWIC also has five international affiliates: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, which includes Ireland, Scotland, London, and Wales. NAWIC Region Map & Chapters

5 YOU GET OUT OF IT WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT!
Benefits & Value YOU GET OUT OF IT WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT! You joined NAWIC for a reason, but why? Do you know the benefits available to you? These benefits can enhance both your professional and personal life. Not only can they benefit you, they can and should benefit your employer. How do you define value? {Take answers from room}

6 What is Value? val-u-a-ble - Definition Having monetary value
Worth a good price Having desirable or esteemed characteristics or qualities Of great use or service Just by being here today, shows you are taking advantage of the value NAWIC has to offer. You are investing in your time and growth.

7 Professional & Personal
Develop skills through Leadership roles Committees Speaking and Speakers Networking In person Phone & Social Media When I joined NAWIC three years ago, I never would have dreamed of being up here giving a presentation. I was so timid and lacked self-confidence. But I wanted to be involved in my chapter so I agreed to chair a committee. That was my leaping off point. Since then, I have served in various positions both on committees and as a chapter officer. Those roles have developed skills in all kinds of areas: Event planning, Marketing and Advertising, People management, but probably most importantly, serving in these roles forced me to step out of my comfort zone! Equally important, I had fun! Find your passion and put it to use in your chapter. Volunteer to speak at a chapter meeting or special event…share your knowledge. There are so many opportunities to network. Local, regional, and national events give that face to face interaction. Social media is also a good way to keep in touch. However, don’t forget about the phone…if you have a question about a specific topic, are looking for suppliers or contractors in a different area of the country, or just get stranded out of town and need help, look up the local chapter web site and call or a member.

8 Committees Required Other National Finance Membership
Professional Development Nominating Other National PR & Marketing Safety & Health OSHA Alliance WIC Week Special and AdHoc, as needed Let’s go back and take a closer look at committees for a few minutes. The NAWIC Operations Manual Section C, Article 13 outlines the required committees for every chapter. These are Finance, Membership, and Professional Development. These make perfect sense…watch over the chapter budget and funds, promote membership and growth, and provide development opportunities to our members. Section C also provides for the formation of the Nominating Committee as a Special Committee each year. These are the only required committees; however, we can accomplish so much more by forming other committees. Many have chairs at every level so the national goals can be communicated to the regions and chapters. This ensures the chapter goals are in line with the national goals. As we all know, this is also a great avenue for creative competition among all the chapters. At the national level and our local chapter, the Vice President is the Committee Coordinator. This ensures she has a good working knowledge of all the committees and their functions.

9 Membership/Marketing N R Professional Development N R
Safety & Health N R WIC Week N R OSHA Alliance N R NEF Block Kids R Design Drafting R Fundraising/Liaison R This chart shows those committees we have at the regional level and their counterparts at national. NEF has its own office and programs. The regional chairs are there to assist the chapters who choose to participate in NEF’s programs. Your handout includes a list of all the current national and regional chairs and their contact info. I keep sharing what the Fort Worth chapter does, but it is a good reference point. I have also included a list of all the committees we have and what they do. This is an extensive list, but some committees are only “operational” for a brief part of the year. For example, Block Kids, Design Drafting, WIC Week, and others may only take a few months to plan, execute, and recap.

10 Business Career Center Advertising & Sponsorships Find employees
Find a job Advertising & Sponsorships Local Regional National Some of the benefits to your company are the online Career Center found on the National web site. This is not limited to members, anyone can take advantage of the career center. We will look at it more later. Companies can also take advantage of the opportunity to support NAWIC and market to their target audience through sponsorships and advertising. A company can contribute at any level at any time from sponsoring or advertising for a specific event to being an annual sponsor.

11 Education NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF)
K-12 Programs Adult Certifications NAWIC Founders Scholarship Fund (NFSF) Construction-related college programs Trade Schools Apprenticeship programs The NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) provides and promotes educational opportunities from kindergarten through adult programs. NEF was founded in 1973 and is headquartered in Orlando, Florida. K-12 programs include Block Kids, Accessory Structure Project, and CAD/Drafting Competition. Additionally, NEF offers certification programs for adults which give a more in-depth knowledge of the industry as a whole. NFSF administers scholarships for many of the local chapters. Nationally, NFSF awards more than $25,000 to worthy recipients. Awards range from $500 to $2,500. The requirements for the scholarships vary because each chapter can set their own criteria. However, applicants must be enrolled in construction-related studies to qualify. Also, some chapters decide to administer and award scholarships on their own. Check with your local chapter. More information about NEF and NFSF is available under the Careers & Education tab on the National web site.

12 NEF Certifications www.nef-edu.org
Construction Bookkeeping Technician (CBT) Construction Industry Technician (CIT) Construction Industry Specialist (CIS) Construction Document Technician (CDT) Estimating and Scheduling Practitioner (ESP) Certified Construction Associate (CCA) Currently, the certifications available are, Construction Bookkeeping Technician (CBT), Construction Industry Technician (CIT), Construction Industry Specialist (CIS), Construction Document Technician, Estimating & Scheduling Practitioner, and Certified Construction Associate. Now, you see what those initials after so many of our members names come from! The K-12 programs have been redesigned are now available. Be sure to check out the NEF web site for more information. You can also reach the web site through the link under the Careers & Education tab on the national web site.

13 Navigating the National Web Site
Most of the information I have discussed so far came directly from the national web site. The best way to learn what is there is to just get in and explore. I’m not going to spend much time on open areas. I want to concentrate on the Member Center. However, the national web site is a great recruitment tool. You can create a shortcut on your phone and always have access to show potential members and sponsors all the benefits. The Career Center is accessible to anyone on the Careers & Education Tab. Here you can post job openings for your company or search for a new job. Go check it out.

14 Member Center The Member Center is your lifeline to all things NAWIC. I will touch on every tab, but focus on some specific ones. When you enter the Member Center, you will find links to recent news and topics of interest.

15 Name Search The directory lets you look up members by a variety of criteria. Look ups are simple. Say you met someone last night…you remember her name is Lori, but you don’t remember what chapter or her last name. Simply put that in the first name field, select South Central Region in the Region field, go to the bottom and hit Search.

16 Name Results You see there are six members named Lori in our region. Click on the to send a quick message or click on the last name to get her address, phone numbers and more.

17 Occupation Search You can also search by occupation. Say you need some legal advice or are looking to hire an attorney. Who better than a member of NAWIC? Select the area you want to search. Let’s say this time you have your first job in Colorado. The job is not paying and you need to know about the lien laws so you can get your notices sent. You could call your local attorney and ask, but they will need time to research or call someone they know. Do a member search to find an attorney in Colorado, make a quick phone call, and you will probably get your answer while you are on the phone.

18 Leadership The Leadership Directory takes you to links to retrieve lists of current national officers, region directors, past presidents, chapters, chapter presidents and more. There is even a link to the current national and regional committee chairs. Finally, toward the bottom is a link to contacts at the national office.

19 Benefits The last area I want to point out on the Members tab in the Member Benefits. Here you will find companies who offer discounts and special member rates. I have used the rental car discounts several times and saved a significant amount. Check out and use these discounts to help save money and show these companies our appreciation.

20 Chapters Tab I won’t spend much time here. From this tab you can access chapter forms such as check requests, special event insurance (did you know you need special event insurance for Block Kids?), chapter membership forms such as transfers, dues updates and officer changes, and order forms for chapter marketing tools.

21 Committees The committees tab is invaluable for chairs to get ideas, forms, and important information. We will look closer at a few.

22 Membership & Marketing
Look at all the tools provided on this tab! In addition to the committee handbooks, you can get templates for thank you letters, surveys, business cards, certificates, sponsorships, brochures and more. There are also several links with recruiting, orientation, and networking tips. Our region committee chairs for membership are Ida Henderson and Toni Osberry. We still need a PR Marketing chair.

23 Professional Development
Professional development and education are a major reason a lot of us are members. Over the years, this committees chairs have worked hard to provide resources to address this need. From the PD&E page, you can access webinars and podcasts on various topics. Many times I cannot attend the “live” webinar because of my schedule. I can always come to this page and watch them when I can. The Continuing Education link leads to a list of resources for colleges, certifications, MAGIC Camp, NEF, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and more. The Bookstore leads you to leadership and self help books available from Amazon. In fact, you can click on the title and be taken right to Amazon to order the book. The Bulletin Board has not been to active lately, but is an excellent place to ask questions or share ideas with other members. I like to pop on the boards occasionally and see what is new. Many times, someone else has asked the same question I have been thinking about. PD&E even has their own FaceBook page, LinkedIn Group, and Twitter! Finally, there is another link to the Career Center. The region PD&E chair is Christine Barnhill.

24 Safety & Health Awareness
The Safety and Health Awareness committee has its own FaceBook page and Twitter. The committee page features links to webinars and other resources. It also includes a link to the NAWIC OSHA Alliance page. Both of these committees include information that can be shared as a meeting topic, lunch and learn, or seminar. There are also tidbits and articles that can be included in your chapter newsletter. Regional chair for Safety and Health is Kim Gibbons.

25 WIC Week The WIC Week committee page is small but powerful. At this time, it only includes two links: the WIC Week and the WIC Week web site. Yes, WIC Week has its own web site.

26 The WIC Week page provides everything you need to make your WIC Week plans. Your chapter president should have already received an from the national WIC Week chair. Our Regional WIC Week chairs are Dana Lumpkin and Laurie Parker. They will cover more about WIC Week in their breakout session.

27 Education The Education tab provides links to Lorman Education resources and NEF. NAWIC and Lorman have partnered together to offer training opportunities. NAWIC members receive a 15% discount on courses. They offer live seminars, live webinars, and OnDemand webinars. We talked about NEF earlier. This link provides another place to access the NEF web site. The region NEF committees are chaired by Debbie Parker (Block Kids), Kari Worth and Martha Simpson (NEF Liaison), and Pareena Trochecett (Design Drafting).

28 Regions From the Regions tab, you can get more information about each region. Select any region to get more information specific to that region.

29 South Central For example, selecting South Central Region provides links for the region web site, chapter web sites, region forms, and new member reports.

30 Toolbox The Toolbox is another area I want to spend a few minutes on. There are a lot of resources available here.

31 Emblems & Logos Various logos are available in different formats. These can be used on chapter materials, signatures, and more. One word of caution…check with the national office before using for promotional products, social media, and other uses. Copyright laws do apply.

32 Leadership Training Remember the leadership training series presented by our national officers this past year. All of those seminars are available here as a YouTube podcast. Any handouts are also available. Even if you missed the live seminar, you can get this valuable information. Use it in your own chapter to train the incoming officers.

33 Mentoring Program I just downloaded these materials myself. I hope to develop a formal mentoring program in our chapter by We are working with the Dallas Chapter to develop Camp NAWIC for girls in our area. However, I want to design a program within the chapter itself to partner members together to mentor each other. Take a look at this program and see if it will help your chapter and members.

34 Programs-in-a-Box What happens if the night before your meeting your speaker gets sick or has to cancel? What would you do? Programs-in-a-Box are your quick answer. These are being updated, but in the past, there were all kinds of topics available. Some included Blueprint reading, parliamentary procedure, safety topics, and more. [NOTE TO SELF: Update this slide prior to presentation to give more examples]

35 Store The Store has all things NAWIC for personal and chapter use.
Order your membership pins, officer guards and other jewelry. Order personal and chapter supplies including business cards, premade certificates, and marketing tools. You can even find AMEC memorabilia pins some from as far back as 1998. Show your NAWIC pride with promotional items. You can also use these items for new member gifts, birthday gifts and other giveaways.

36 NAWIC 101 We are about out of time. I hope you have some new information about NAWIC to help you personally and professionally. Thank you for your time and attention. Before we dismiss, I want to leave one more thought for you.

37 Remember, ANYTHING is possible if only you believe.
Always believe in YOU. Listen to your heart. Trust your instincts. Know you CAN. See your own strengths. Give it your best. DO what you dream of. Follow your vision. Remember, ANYTHING is possible if only you believe. Always believe in YOU. Listen to your heart. Trust your instincts. Know you CAN. See your own strengths. Give it your best. DO what you dream of. Follow your vision. Remember, ANYTHING is possible if only you believe. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!
