WE NEED VISION ZERO by Erica Chen, Oscar Bautista, Ericka Saldana

2 Overview Throughout the world, Vision Zero has been taking action and has tried to save lives from terrible accidents. Communities have come together to help the people in their area to achieve the goal known as Vision Zero. Community programs such as the Police Departments, Department of Transportation, Department of Citywide Administrative Services, etc. These programs have shown individual function. In addition, Vision Zero had traffic safety problems and help transform cultural attitudes toward death and injury. However, Vision Zero helped improve or have more government agencies, industry groups, police officers and crossing guard that can decrease deaths.

3 City Hall The power to reduce the citywide speed limit to 25 mph
To increase the penalties associated with dangerous driver behavior To educate fleet drivers and explore design changes to their automotive fleets Create a permanent Vision Zero task force in the Mayor’s Office of Operation Organize information about the City’s Vision Zero plans, upcoming events and providing data Manage Vision Zero presentations across the City

4 Police Department Going to hire more crossing guards for schools
Improve the technology to capture better crash data and also will be given to train additional personnel Will increase highway unit to 263 personnel Change traffic plans to increase focus on pedestrian safety Increase enforcement against people who break moving violations Ex: Texting while driving, not stopping to pedestrians, speeding, etc.

Handling through street-level outreach and enforcement Call monthly meetings of the DOT Traffic Division and the NYPD Transportation Bureau Expand data-driven citywide enforcement strategy Able to target outreach in 500 schools each year

6 Department of Transportation
Going to create 25 new arterial slow zones including 8 new neighborhood slow zones Install more speeding cameras and speed bumps The mayor proposes to enhance street lighting at 1000 intersections Planning to provide age appropriate safety curriculum that will be available in schools

7 Department of Transportation + Taxi & Limousine Commission
Problems for TLC drivers have with the red light camera Update taxi school to account for new streetscape features and alert drivers to higher-crash street types

8 Taxi & Limousine Commission
New TLC safety enforcement squad, supplies as speed radars to regulated safety Add safety flyers and messaging in TLC mailings to drivers Changes and new TLC rules to increase penalties on TLC drives who are into dangerous behavior Vision Zero Driver Safety Honor Roll has been created Vehicle design requirements to improve safety

9 Department of Citywide Administrative Services
• Making sure that all City fleet vehicles have the equipment with technology that record speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors, by the end of 2014 • Improving the collision tracking system for the citywide fleet through the new NYC Fleet Focus fleet system • Oversee a citywide expansion of Defensive Driver training courses for all employees driving City vehicles • DCAS recommend safety related devices and designy Example: high visibility vehicles, back-up cameras, and rear wheel side guards

10 Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
•Manage public health surveillance on traffic-related hospitalizations and fatalities • Provide Vision Zero task force with public health data to help target traffic safety interventions • Include traffic fatalities and injuries and prevention messages in public health reports • Attract community public health partners in promoting Vision Zero goals • Promote research on walking, driving, motorcycling, and cycling behaviors and patterns in the city
