A new twist for School’s Free Choice Unit: Peace Child
Creating an E portfolio: design a blog… A new twist for School’s Free Choice Unit: Peace Child

The contract… During the weekend / holiday you read the novel “Peace Child” based on the theme of Questions of faith. You will have a 3 -week schedule to create and respond to yours and others blogs.

What is faith? How do I relate to faith? How did Don Richardson relate to Faith? How do the Sawi relate to faith? How does Faith relate to the world in which we live? What should we do when we are confronted with other cultures? What does God expect us to do for other cultures and faiths?

What should we do? What should society do for “uncivilized cultures” like the Sawi? What does Jesus want us to do for the Sawi? What do traders and NGO’S do for these cultures? What do mission organisations do for these people?

WHO OR WHAT IS THE PEACE CHILD TO ME?
What concepts in the Sawi culture intregued / reviled / saddened / angered / surprised you? How different is your modern culture from the Sawi tenets? How did Christianity change this culture? What reflections and connections can you make with this novel? Choose a representative passage from this novel that holds particular significence to you. Type it in and comment on its significance.

Where does the blog fit? As a class, we will each create our own blog pages. Then you will create 8 posts (entries) responding to the specific questions about this book. Each entry should be about 250 words in length. You will be given links to your peers’ blogs and will also check in with their ideas about your reflections. You will post 6 response posts on the sites of your peers (1 paragraph each).

Sample blog… Let’s take a look at Mrs. Mc’s family blog:

What to post: Post comments not summaries. Post your thoughts and comments about the plot and the characters, events, themes and analysis of the work as a whole. Your comments should demonstrate an understanding of the novel and the complex issues it raises. Ask questions and discuss in writing what your don’t understand in the novel. Think about the blog layout and how it will reflect who you are. Think about the photos you want to include that will help you and your readers to reflect upon what you have to say. Invite six friends to comment on your blog. Post a comment on six peer sites. Make sure you create a link page to the comments you have posted.
