1 Cells Structure SC Compare and contrast the general structures of plant and animal cells. Compare and contrast the general structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

2 Cells Objective: Compare and contrast pro and eukaryotes and plant and animal cells. EQ: How are the characteristics of life manifested by the cell?

3 Molecule Organelle Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism Organize the following terms from smallest to largest (RIGHT side) Cell Organ Organelle Molecule Organ System Tissue Organism

4 What is a Cell? Cells are microscopic and are made of similar building blocks; enclosed by cell membrane that is filled with cytoplasm and organelles Cytoplasm= The gel-like substance inside a cell that contains molecular building blocks (proteins, nucleic acids, etc.) as well as organelles Organelles= structures specialized to preform distinct processes within the cell

5 Cells Eukaryotic Prokaryotic

6 Two Types of Cells Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic:
“Pro” means “before” “Karyon” means nucleus “Eu” means “true” So what does Prokaryotic mean? What does Eukaryotic mean?

7 Types of Cells Types of cells: Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
Eukaryotic cells- have a nucleus (stores DNA) and other membrane-bound organelles Prokaryotic Cells- no nucleus or other membrane bound organelles verses

8 Prokaryotic Cells ALL BACTERIA!!!!!
Have no nucleus, but DNA in cytoplasm have no membrane-bound organelles bacteria (Kingdom Monera)- unicellular more simple than eukaryotes cells have a single circular Plasmid (DNA) have ribosomes surrounded by a cell membrane and a cell wall some have an external flagellum for movement first forms of life on earth, evolving over 3.5 billion years ago ALL BACTERIA!!!!!

9 Cells Eukaryotic Prokaryotic Bacteria

10 Eukaryotic Cells Have a nucleus that contains DNA
Have cell membrane, some (plants) cell wall Have organelles in cytoplasm (including Flagella and Cilia) All other cells than bacteria Larger and more complex Uni or multicellular organism Divided into two categories: Plants and Animal

11 Cells Eukaryotic Plants Animal Prokaryotic Bacteria

12 All cells have…. Cell membrane Cytoplasm DNA Ribosomes

13 Eukaryotic Cell vs. Prokaryotic cell

14 Venn diagram flipbook Cut out each page on the SOLID black line
Order the pages 1-3 (picture, info, questions) Paste pg three to the LEFT side of your notebook Cut page 1 and 2 along the solid back line to the dotted line

15 Flip book C- level 2 voice (talk to your table partner)
Create flipbook comparing and contrasting Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic C- level 2 voice (talk to your table partner) H- use your notes and ask 3 before me A- Complete the flipbook Venn diagram and questions for Pro vs Eu cells (cut along the solid line TO the dotted line) M- remain seated in your assigned seat P- complete your own flipbook venn diagram SUCCESS

17 Plant vs Animals Both plant and animal cells are Eukaryotic cells
Both have the presence of a cell membrane and organelles BUT Animal cells are round and irregular in shape Plant cells have fixed, rectangular shapes

18 Organelles of Eukaryotic Cells
Cell Wall Chloroplast Cell membrane Vacuoles Cytoplasm Endoplasmic Reticulum (smooth and rough) Ribosomes Mitochondria Golgi Apparatus Nucleus Nuclear Envelope Nucleolus Microtubules/microfilaments Lysosomes Cilia/ Flagella Centrioles Plasmid Chromatin Chromosomes

19 Plant vs Animal Plants Animals Why couldn't the plants escape prison?
Their cells were surrounded by walls. Plants Animals Chloroplast Cell wall Central vacuole Lysosome Cilia/flagella

20 A specific type of cell is being studied by a scientist
A specific type of cell is being studied by a scientist. She notices the cell contains a nucleus, lysosomes, a cell membrane and cell wall. What is the correct classification of this cell? A prokaryotic animal cell A prokaryotic plant cell A eukaryotic animal cell eukaryotic plant cell

21 Cells can be classified into two different categories: prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Which of the following information is needed in order to determine if an organism is prokaryotic? The organism’s color and mass. The organism’s internal structures. If the organism is unicellular or multicellular. The methods the organism uses to feed and move.

22 Using a microscope in the science lab, Jill observed two unknown cell: Cell 1 and Cell 2. Cell 1 she identified as a plant cell and Cell 2 as an animal cell. Her teacher told her she identified the cells correctly. What did Jill most likely observe to correctly identify the cells? Cell 2 had a cell membrane and Cell 1 did not. Cell 1 had a cell wall and Cell 2 did not. Cell 2 had a chloroplast and Cell 1 did not. Cell 1 had a nucleus and Cell 2 did not

23 Cell Summary Summarize todays lesson on the right side of your notes. At least 5 complete sentences.

24 Exit Ticket

25 The cell would produce more proteins than it needs.
If a cell’s lysosomes were damaged, which of the following would most likely occur? The cell would produce more proteins than it needs. The cell would have chloroplasts that appear yellow rather than green. The cell would be less able to break down molecules in its cytoplasm. The cell would be less able to regulate the amount of fluid in its cytoplasm.
