What is the function of the cell membrane?
Put homework out on desk Homework tonight: HP#2 answer reading questions
2
What should enter or leave the cell?
In your groups make a list of … 4 things that should be allowed to enter a cell 4 things that should be allowed to leave a cell 4 things that should be kept out of a cell
3
I am the cell membrane…. In your groups, write a 3 sentence monolog about your life as a cell membrane. Be prepared to share with the group!
4
The Cell Membrane two main functions:
Protection – protects the cell from the outside environment Regulation – controls what can enter and exit the cell It’s selectively permeable, meaning it only allows certain things to enter or leave the cell
5
What’s it made of?
6
Components of the Cell Membrane
LIPIDS: Phospholipids make up the majority of the cell membrane Hydrophilic head made out of phosphates (Phospho) Hydrophobic tail made out of fatty acids (Lipid) To protect the hydroPHOBIC tails from water, they form a bilayer which keeps the tails huddled inside and the water loving heads outside.
7
Hydrophobic vs. Hydrophilic
What does phobic mean? What’s another word with phobic in it? What does philic mean? What’s another word with philic in it?

10
PROTEINS: bring materials into the cell and receive signals from outside the cell
11
CARBOHYDRATES: are attached to proteins or lipids and their antenna help cells identify or recognize other cells
12
Cholesterol: helps stabilize the structure of the membrane
13
Label and color your own cell membrane
Your Turn! Label and color your own cell membrane
15
Cell Membrane Structure and Function
Work together as a group- everyone on the same question at the same time This is going to count as a formal grade Use your notes and each other Remember to analyze the pictures and text as you answer the questions I will be circulating to help
16
Exit Ticket Complete the cell membrane matching exit ticket
