2 What is a computer? A computer is an electronic device that:
Manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You can use a computer to: Type documents; Send ; Browse the Web; Handle spreadsheets; Accounting; Database management; Presentations; Games, and more.

3 How do we use a computer in our daily lives?
Surfing the internet; Playing computer games; Sending an to friends or families; or Social media

4 Computer games When you play your favorite computer game, do you have to think about the keys that allow you to move or fire?

5 Is keyboarding is a learned skill?
The use of a keyboard is a motor skill, just like riding a bike. Once your muscles have mastered the technique, it allows you to perform the task without thinking about it.

6 What are the benefits of learning how to type?
Keep your eyes focused on your work; You do not have to think about where the keys are; You can concentrate on your spelling and grammar; and You can concentrate on the content of your writing.

7 Have you ever looked at someone type really fast?
What is the first thing that goes through your mind when you see someone type really fast? What do people who type fast have in common? They never look at the keyboard as they type; They use all of their fingers; They mastered the proper technique; and They practice!!!

8 Two-Finger Typing How many of you type with two fingers?
Why do you believe you type with two fingers? Think about our example of the bicycle…do you really want to be stuck in training wheels, thinking about every turn?

9 Why should you master keyboarding skills?
It allows you to concentrate on where you are going, not how you are going to get there.

10 What are proper techniques on mastering keyboarding?
Maintaining good posture; and Correct fingers on the keys

11 The first computer The first electronic computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), was developed in 1946. It took up 1,800 square feet and weighed 30 tons.

12 What are the different types of computers?
Personal computer Desktop work, home, school, or the library small, medium, or large sit on a desk Laptop computer Battery- or AC-powered More portable than desktop computers Sometimes called a notebook computer Add more RAM or a larger hard drive. Computers come in many shapes and sizes; and They perform many different functions in our daily lives ATM Scan groceries at the store Calculator

13 Other types of computers
Tablet computers: These use a touch-sensitive screen for typing and navigation. Because they don't require a keyboard or mouse. The iPad is an example of a tablet computer. Mobile phones: Many mobile phones can do a lot of things computers can do, such as browsing the Internet and playing games. These phones are often called smartphones.

14 Other types of computers
Game consoles: A game console is a specialized kind of computer that is used for playing video games. Although they are not as fully featured as desktop computers, many newer consoles, such as the PS3, allow you to perform nongaming tasks like browsing the Web. TVs: Many TVs now include applications (or apps) that let you access various types of online content. For example, you can view your Facebook news feed or watch streaming movies on Netflix

15 Vocabulary What does the term boot mean? What is a software?
To start up a computer. What is a software? A program that runs on a computer. Name one example of a software? Microsoft Windows (PC) OS X Mavericks (MAC) What does the term crash mean? A hardware or software failure.

16 Vocabulary What is a server?
A server is a computer that "serves up" information to other computers on a network; Many businesses have file servers that employees can use to store and share files; A server can look like a regular desktop computer, or it can be much larger; and Servers also play an important role in making the Internet work: They are where webpages are stored. When you use your browser to click a link, a web server delivers the page you requested.

17 Homework Complete a technology collage on a sheet of 8 ½ x 11 paper. You can put all sorts of technology pictures in your collage. For example, an iPad, a cell phone, an ATM machine, laptop, etc. Due 8/22/14 Put your name on your homework Have a parent or guardian sign the back and date it after completing it.
