3. The Hook
Good writing starts with a good hook. Whether it is a narrative, a response to literature, or a research paper, there is no excuse to bore your reader!

Besides, if you can’t prove to your reader that you can write an interesting hook….
…why would they want to read on?

4. INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH
The Hook
The introductory paragraph begins with the hook, to catch the audience. It’s followed by some background and a thesis (a sentence that sums up your whole paper).

“She’ll always be with us honey.” That’s what my mom said after we found Sprinkles. She held my hand and wiped my tears, and made me feel better.
And that is always how my mom has been. Her name is Rachael, a sister to four other brothers and sisters, and she is a kind and giving person. She married my dad when she was nineteen, and had me when she was twenty.
BACKGROUND INFO
She’s always been there for me (point 1), and her strength is inspiring (point 2) -- my mother is very important to me (topic).

Use an inspiring or shocking quote.
Use vivid language to create a snapshot.

Can you remember a day when you just wished you could go back and do it all over again? Well this is what the characters from Animal Farm felt when….

8. The Hook: Inspiring Quote
Start your composition with an entertaining flair by using a quote from someone famous.
“A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength” (Proverbs 24:5).
The french philosopher Pascal once said, ““Justice and power must be brought together, so that whatever is just may be powerful, and whatever is powerful may be just.”
If only the animals from Animal Farm would have listened…

9. The Hook: Snapshot
Use vivid language to describe a moment and make your reader feel invested.
The smell of blood, the sound of stomach’s rumbling, the vicious growl of a bloodthirsty dog, maybe of your own child, this is the smoking bloody world of the characters of Animal Farm….
