3 DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
Research is an art of scientific investigation. The Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English lays down the meaning of research as “a careful investigation or inquiry specially through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge.” Redman and Mory define research as a “systematized effort to gain new knowledge.”

4 MOTIVATION IN RESEARCH
What makes people to undertake research?

5 Desire to consequential benefits; unsolved problems, creative work;
Get a research degree along with its consequential benefits; Face the challenge in solving the unsolved problems, Get intellectual joy of doing some creative work; Be of service to society; Get respectability.

6 POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION REGULATIONS,
4) Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)/Master of Surgery (M.S.) M.D./M.S. examinations, in any subject shall consist of Thesis, Theory Papers, and clinical/Practical and Oral examinations.  (a) Thesis Every candidate shall carry out work on an assigned research project under the guidance of a recognised Post Graduate Teacher, the result of which shall be written up and submitted in the form of a Thesis.  Work for writing the Thesis is aimed at contributing to the development of a spirit of enquiry, besides exposing the candidate to the techniques of research, critical analysis, acquaintance with the latest advances in medical science and the manner of identifying and consulting available literature.  Thesis shall be submitted at least six months before the theoretical and clinical / practical examination. 

7 The following Sub-clause is added after clause 13
The following Sub-clause is added after clause 13.8(c) in terms of Gazette Notification dated and the same is enclosed as Annexure VII as under:- “13.9- A postgraduate student of a postgraduate degree course in broad specialities/super specialities would be required to present one poster presentation, to read one paper at a national/state conference and to present one research paper which should be published/accepted for publication/sent for publication during the period of his postgraduate studies so as to make him eligible to appear at the postgraduate degree examination.”

c) Research: He/she should know the basic concepts of research methodology, be able to plan a research project and should know how to consult resources in the library and use the internet. Basic knowledge of statistics is also required.

15 PROTOCOL The word protocol comes from the
Greek protocollon, meaning a leaf of paper glued to a manuscript volume that describes the contents.

16 THESIS PROTOCOL A thesis protocol is a document design by a panel of experts and adherence by all study investigators. The protocol describes the scientific rationale, objective(s), design, methodology, statistical considerations, and organization of the planned trial. The protocol contains a precise study plan for executing the clinical trial,
