13 Questions? https://tuckwell.anu.edu.au
FAQ’s: How much is the Scholarship worth? Scholarship winners will receive $21,700 per annum (increasing with inflation) for each year of their degree. This amount is intended to cover the cost of residential accommodation, living expenses and some costs associated with your study. (If people ask about HECS-HELP, it is not intended to cover this cost). What about covering the cost of HECS-HELP? The intention of the Tuckwell Scholarship is to cover the cost of on-campus residential accommodation, living expenses and some costs associated with your study. It is not intended to cover HECS-HELP costs. Is the Scholarship just for undergraduate students? Yes. The Tuckwell Scholarship program is only for undergraduate students. How can I apply? The first step of the application process is to fill in an online initial application form. I haven't held a position of leadership at my school. Will this make it unlikely for me to be selected for a Tuckwell Scholarship? No. While leadership positions are sometimes indicators of character attributes and involvement in school life, other activities or roles you have undertaken may give insight into your character, talents and aspirations. You may not have put yourself forward or have been selected for leadership roles but your engagement and commitment to other activities may be outstanding in other ways. Evaluate how you meet the selection criteria and identify what makes you stand out, using evidence from your activities and interests. If you meet the eligibility requirements, can clearly demonstrate a mix of the attributes we are looking for and can persuasively describe your potential as a Tuckwell Scholar then you should consider applying. We recommend you talk to your teacher and to your parents about applying for the program before you start to complete the application form. What if I am not sure about whether I am good enough to apply? After reading through the information on the website, talk to your parents and your school teachers about how you fit with the eligibility requirements and the selection criteria. If you don't know your predicted Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR), your teachers may be able to offer you some guidance about whether you are likely to meet the academic requirements. In terms of the attributes of a Tuckwell Scholar, each person is different and will be able to evidence these in varying degrees. Think about how you demonstrate these attributes in your daily life and in your interactions with others, which attributes you feel describe you best and which you really own.  A lack of confidence is a natural response whenever we have to do self-evaluation and it is generally a good response to have. It shows you're thinking about your qualities and talent in a way you probably haven't had to do before, and so a little doubt is expected. Once you've worked through all the information and discussed it with those that support or teach you, then you'll start to know whether or not the Tuckwell Scholarship is for you – and you for it. Do I have to be Australian to apply? Yes, you must be an Australian citizen (or the holder of an Australian permanent resident humanitarian visa) to be eligible to apply. Permanent residents are not eligible, you must be an Australian citizen. Do I have to intend to stay in Australia? We anticipate that many Tuckwell Scholars will want to study or work overseas for a time but that they will return to give back to Australia in a wide variety of ways, be it through developing communities, teaching, entrepreneurship or social development, or by participating in many other different activities or professions that benefit the country over the long term. Who is on the Selection Panel? The Selection Panel is made up of a group of people who are diverse in age, gender and background. This diversity gives them the ability to assess candidates in many different ways. Interviews Aside from the interviews in Canberra, what other forms of assessment will take place during that weekend? The individual interviews that occur with the Selection Panel are the only forms of assessment that will take place over the Interview Weekend. Around these, there is a schedule of activities for you to experience the University's campus, its facilities and to meet some of the staff and current students. You’ll be able to stay in a hall of residence and meet the other short-listed Tuckwell Scholarship candidates. Will the cost of traveling to Canberra for the interview be covered? Yes, your travel costs (eg airfares), accommodation and meals for the interview weekend will be paid for as part of the program. Will I live on campus? Yes. All Tuckwell Scholars will live in an ANU Hall or Residential College on the ANU campus for at least the first two years of their program. Beyond completing my course, what will be expected of me as a Tuckwell Scholar? You will be encouraged to participate in Scholars House meetings and activities and in the development of the Tuckwell Scholar community as it grows year on year, helping and mentoring those new to Scholars House. It is also hoped that you'll enjoy getting involved in wider ANU campus and community life. As a Tuckwell Scholar you'll be expected to conduct yourself in your academic, social and community life on campus in the spirit of the attributes and values you demonstrated when applying for the Scholarship. What degrees can I do if I am a Tuckwell Scholar? Tuckwell Scholars are able to study any single or double undergraduate program, including honours and vertical degrees (degrees that combine undergraduate and graduate study, across a range of disciplines, completed in a reduced time-frame) in any discipline offered at ANU for up to five years. I need help with my application. Is there someone I can talk to? Yes. You can contact us using our contact form on the website and someone will get in touch to help you. What sort of advice can I get? Our staff can provide or direct you to information about the application process, and will try to answer questions or concerns you or your parents may have before you make the decision to apply for a Tuckwell Scholarship. Our staff will also be able to direct you to information about the programs at ANU and any of the services that the University offers to its students. Staff will not be able to give you advice on what to write in the personal statement section of your main application form.
