1 Earthquakes: Some staggering facts
In the US: Deaths are ~stable over the past 100 years Economic losses are rising exponentially In the world: Earthquake fatality rate has doubled twice in the past 250 years. Major cause = urban expansion A repeat of the 1811 earthquake in the central Mississippi Valley region today would cause ~6,000 fatalities and $50 billion of damage. Earthquakes do not kill, buildings do. The total urban population by 2050 may exceed 5 billion people, with new super- and megacities: Annual fatality rate and damage cost from earthquakes will keep rising Global issue Now is the time to prepare for future urban earthquakes
