2. Third World Countries
1955 – Sukarno hosts meeting of 29 African and Asian against colonization in Bandung, Indonesia (Bulliet 839)
Called Third World and non-aligned nations because if Russia represented one side of the world in the Cold War, and the U.S another, Third World was everyone else.
Many countries took advantage of the quarrel between the US and USSR by playing both sides and profiting from both. (Andrea|Overfield 475)
1952, Egypt lead military coup. Anwar al-Sadat took command. (Spodek 663)
Under his rule, the US offered to build a dam at Aswan.
Eygpt then turned to USSR for arms so the US stopped construction in 1956.
Where they left off, the USSR picked up and finished the dam in 1960s

3. Japan and China
1951 Japan signed treaty with most of its former enemies.

Made reparations in forms of goods and services
3 industries that took advantage of government aid are: electricity, steel, and ship building. (Bulliet 841)
Japan stayed out of Cold War, China was deeply involved
1949 Peoples Republic of China (allied with Soviet Union)
1966 Mao Zedong-Cultural Revolution-Mass mobilization of Chinese youth into Red Guard units in order to stimulate revolutionary passion and to keep the country from becoming a bureaucracy. (Andrea|Overfield 476)

4. The Middle East 1952- Coups overthrew king Faruq of Egypt
1958- King Falsay 2 of Iraq
All Arab politics overshadowed by the struggle with Israel.
British control over Palestine created conflict between Zionist Jews and Native Palestinians.(Andrea|Overfield 478)
Because of the Balfour Declaration, Zionist Jews emigrated to Palestine making the Palestinians feel like they were taking over.
1936-Arabs unleashed a guerilla uprising against the British. (Spodek 668)
November A general assembly voted in favor of separating Palestine into 2 states.
May Israel declared independence so neighboring Arabian countries sent reinforcements to help crush the rising state. Israel won.
