1 ABB Medium Voltage Power Products
Helping our customers meet evolving energy demands

2 Power distribution today
Industry trends Utility challenges Aging Infrastructure: Much of the exsting grid infrastructure is reaching the end of its expected lifespan Reliability concerns are increasing at a time when budgets are increasingly constrained Safety: An estimated 5-10 arc flash incidents occur everyday in the US alone Utilities must protect personnel and property Increasing demand: World energy consumption expected to rise over 96% by 2035 Utilities need to find solutions that increase the capacity and efficiency of their existing infrastructure Speaker notes: These are some of the trends that are causing headaches for utilities. The right hand column only touches on some of the issues at a high level. Retiring workforce: Over half the energy sector workforce expected to reach retirement in the next decade Equipment must be easy to use, require minimal training and allow workforce to get more done with fewer resources * Cap-Schell, Inc.

3 Helping our customer meet evolving energy demands
Reliability Efficiency Asset Management Safety Cost Management ABB Medium Voltage Power Products’ full suite of solutions addresses the essential requirements of medium voltage applications.

4 Reliability challenge
Downtime is costly $79B annually lost in US alone due to system disturbances* Commercial / Industrial sector losses estimated to be $77B Majority due to short duration interruptions Unplanned downtime can lead to fines, lost revenues, and risk of litigation Reliability Efficiency Safety Cost management Asset management Source: Berkley National Laboratory 2004

5 Reliability solutions
Minimize downtime Require products designed for heavy use; requiring minimal maintenance Demand products that meet and exceed industry standards such as ANSI C and ANSI C Leverage factory-trained technicians to respond to emergencies Evaluate life cycle costs in acquisition model Reliability Efficiency Safety Cost management Asset management Speaker notes: Examples that can be used to illustrate points Withstand harsh environments ABB GridGuard is designed to reliably open and close even in corrosive environments after 10 years in the field. GridGuards’s stainless steel bearings provide maintenance free operations in high alkali and salt-fog environments. ABB switchgear last 1/3 longer in corrosive environments and has a rigid construction to withstand high vibration. Withstand heavy use ABB GridShield recloser requires no lubrication, maintenance or adjustments. ABB VersaRupter switch delivers 100 full load operations and 1000 mechanical operations. Meet and exceed industry standards ABB Rmag outdoor breakers are rated for 2,000 operations between servicing and 10,000 mechanical or load operations - 4X the ANSI C requirements. ABB Reliapad’s rigid channelized construction meets or exceeds ANSI C standards.

6 Efficiency challenge Demand is increasing
Over the next 20 years, demand for power is expected to grow by 16% An estimated 40M PEVs could drive that even higher1 Limits are being placed on new generation construction while existing plants are being decommissioned Utilities must get more out of existing infrastructure Reliability Efficiency Safety Cost management Asset management 11Sources: CS Investment Bank, Boston Consulting, Renault-Nissan, Roland Berger

7 Efficiency solutions Improve efficiency of existing infrastructure
Reduce distribution inefficiencies which account for 40% of total energy loss Utilize Volt/VAr Optimization and Conservation Voltage reduction to reduce distribution losses by as much as 5% Implement revenue class accuracy meters to increase efficiency up to 1% or more Reliability Efficiency Safety Cost management Asset management

8 Safety challenge Reliability Efficiency Safety Cost management Asset management Arc flash incidents pose high risk to personnel and property Arc flash incidents kill more than 1 person per day in the US1 Average medical costs are $1.5M2 Over $1 million in property damages per incident Average litigation costs are $5- 10M/per incident2 Speaker notes: According to the IEEE, there are an estimated arc-flashes incidents per year and one death per day in the US alone. Existing standards are designed to protect personnel in the event of an arc-flash – not to prevent them. The $1M+ in property damages only takes into account damages to the switchgear lineup. This is an ABB estimate. 1Source: IEEE 2Source: Flacon Engineering Consultants

9 Safety solutions Protect personnel and property
Reliability Efficiency Safety Cost management Asset management Protect personnel and property Replace older equipment with systems with higher safety ratings Keep personnel at a safe distance Isolate the arc flash to minimize property damage Remove personnel from the greatest dangers, e.g. hot gasses Speaker notes: Examples that can be used to illustrate points Replace older equipment with systems with higher safety ratings: SafeGear™ meets type 2, 2B, 2C and 2BC standards. Keep personnel at a safe distance: Remote racking keeps personnel at a safe distance during installation - one of the most dangerous times. Isolate the arc flash to minimize property damage: REA systems isolate arc flashes Remove personnel from the greatest dangers: SafeGear has optional Plenum to channel hot gases out of the building.

10 Cost management challenge
Reliability Efficiency Safety Cost management Asset management Need to make the best use of limited resources Limited CapEx, maintenance, headcount and training budgets Older systems are more expensive to maintain Stricter efficiency and safety standards require upgrades

11 Cost management solutions
Reliability Efficiency Safety Cost management Asset management Make better use of CapEx and O&M budgets Optimize design of new product requirements Upgrade components instead of replacing entire systems Reduce required training time Reduce maintenance requirements Reduce spare parts inventory Speaker notes: Examples that can be used to illustrate points Optimize design of new product requirements Utilities can buy switchgear with lower interrupting capacity (often less than ½) with the use of the IS Limiter. Upgrade switchgear components instead of replace: Example 1: ABB’s Is-limiter can protect existing, underrated equipment against the effects of short circuit current, eliminating the need to replace the switchgear and existing cabling while significantly reducing downtime. This solution can save a company approximately $339,600 on a line up of 10 breakers: - Cost of new switchgear - $36,000 per breaker - Installation – 5 days for new gear, 2 days for IS-limiter - Existing cabling replacement estimated at $10,000 per breaker (400ft run) Example 2: Replace legacy recloser relays with Relion relays without replacing the entire recloser – saving 10K or more Reduce required training time: Relion protective relays can be preconfigured for your application at no additional cost Reduce maintenance requirements: Example 1: AMVAC breakers have only 1 moving part compared to 157 in a traditional spring breaker. Not only does it make the breaker easier to maintain, it can save as much as $2775 over the first ten years of life. Now, put ten of those breakers in a lineup and the business could save as much as $27,750 Example 2: GridShield outdoor reclosers are rated for 10,000 full load operations- 10X the competition. They don’t require lubrication or maintenance adjustments. This can save a utility as much as $300-$500 per recloser per year. Example 3: ABB Grid Guard switches are self aligning, requiring no preventative maintenance, thereby eliminating the need to climb the pole periodically to align the switch. Reduce spare parts inventory: Utilities can save $thousands in instrumentation transformer inventory carrying costs due to ABB’s unique ability to ship units in four weeks or less – often 8-10 weeks quicker than the competition
