2. Sacred Spaces and Sacred Spaces
Buddhist monasteries are often connected with temples.
Men must spend part of their lives in a monastery in Theravada Buddhism.
When it is time to marry, they will leave their monastery.
In some cases, they return once their children are grown up.
The food is provided by the lay people, they return once their children are grown up.
There are other sacred places for Buddhist besides the monasteries.

3. Temple Is especially sacred for Theravada Buddhists.
Monks live in it, and they perform certain religious rites.
The reason why lay people visit the temples is for religious devotions, meditation, and instruction on Buddhist teachings.
It is also decorated with several images, stories, and scriptures of the Buddha.

4. Temple Continued
In Mahayana temples, there will most likely be images of people from the past who have become enlightened, which are called buddhas.
Temples usually have a place where a monk is able to deliver a sermon in case of a pascal occasion.
Usually when you see monks chanting, there are usually nine.

5. Stupas
Used to be small mounds made of stones of stone or brick that housed the relics of the historical Buddha.
They were usually located close to temple.
The Stupas are still place of Pilgrimage for the Buddhists.
Vajrayana Buddhists normally walk around the Stupa as reverence.

6. Stupas Continued The larger stupas are called Pagodas.
Pagodas are towers in eastern Asia.
It has curved roofs upward at the division of each of several stories.
Considered temples or memorials.
Instead of small and simple mounds, they are large elaborately decorated domes.

7. Places of pilgrimage
There are many sacred places and sacred spaces that many Buddhists hope to travel in their lifetime.
These places are often associated with the Buddha in one way or another.
Some of these places are located in many different countries such as:
Present-Day India
Nepal

8. Lumbini Gardens
The Lumbini Gardens is the traditional site where to Buddha was born.
The Gardens are located in Nepal.
After the death of the Buddha the Gardens became a place of pilgrimage for many Buddhists.
Today in the Lumbini Gardens there stands a two foot pillar in memorial of the Buddha.
This pillar was erected in the third century CE by King Ashoka

9. Bodh Gaya
The Bodh Gaya is the location of bodhi tree in which the Buddha reached enlightenment.
The tree in which is located there is said to be the a descendant from the original bodhi tree.
Close to the tree there is a sandstone that indicates where the Buddha became enlightened.
Many Buddhist pilgrims bring a variety of different goods in order place at tree.
A number of saplings from the bodhi tree are placed throughout India and are also consider sacred places of pilgrimage.

10. Sarnath
The Deer Park near Varanasi where Siddhartha Gautama preached his first sermon.
His sermon was about the Four Truths.
Here he gained his first disciples.
A stupa was constructed by King Ashoka.
Deer still roam the park today.
Its one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage
centers.
Sarnath is one of four holy Buddhist sites sanctioned by the Buddha himself for pilgrimage.
The name Sarnath, comes from Saranganath, means “Lord of the Deer.”

11. Kushinara Traditional place of the death of Gautama.
In 1956 the Kushinara Nirvana Temple was built.
Built to commemorate the 2,500th year of the Buddha entering Nirvana.
A 1,500 year old red statue exists there of a reclining Buddha.

Monasteries are often connected to Buddhist temples.
Mahayana temples include images of other Buddhas and bodhisattvas imagine of Shakyamuni
A stupa contains a relic or other sacred objects of Buddhism.
The most popular places for Buddhist pilgrims are those connected with events in the life of the Buddha.
These sacred places are located in India and Nepal.
