30 students/1 teacher Shared Storage Next Room Different teachers use different arrangements in 5-day-a-week school classrooms. This plan diagrams a very traditional layout. The actual layout in the school may vary from this. Here are 3 concepts that can help various ministries share space. 1. Respect one another’s ministry. Christian schools disciple children in an academic setting. Since children come to school almost every day, they learn school procedures, rules, and consequences. Church ministries disciple children from all backgrounds. Some are saved; some are not. Some are self-controlled; some are not. Some are happy; some are angry. Some want to come; some are required to come. All need to love, trust, and obey Jesus. And Jesus says to allow all children to come. Both ministries are needed by today’s children. 2. Design facilities to accommodate divergent ministries. Unchurched children are more likely to mature spiritually (e.g., learn biblical self-control) in relational settings. Small group settings facilitate relational discipling. Children want to touch what they see. Some children are destructive. It’s a good thing to provide space where delicate projects or equipment can can stored/exchanged before various ministry times. 3. Whenever possible, sharing equipment benefits all the ministries of the church. It’s good stewardship of God’s money. It’s Christlike. It models biblical maturity for the children we are discipling. Efficiency: 1 In-room half lockers secure the belongings of 5-day-a-week students. 2 Easy clean floor covering is used to accommodate Bible lesson crafts and snacks. 3 Shared storage in each room allows some equipment to be rolled out of sight during various ministry times (e.g., Royal Ranger projects during school or class pets during Sunday School). 4 Assigned spaces in wall-hung cabinets store common teaching supplies for all CE ministries. 5 Hinged bulletin boards facilitate sharing display areas during different CE times. 6 Wall-mounted TV/VCRs can be shared by all who teach media-savvy kids. Bible Learning in Sunday School: 7 Flat-topped desks with separate chairs allow the 5-day-a-week classroom to become a modular floor plan on Sunday, just by rearranging furniture. 8 The modular format allows teachers to give personal attention, to build relationships, and to manage behavior in small groups of elementary children. 9 Modular Bible-related learning activities allow children with different intelligences and learning styles all to connect with Bible lessons. Security: 10 Each sink includes a drinking faucet and helps reduce unsupervised time in the halls. In-class restrooms also help keep all children secure & supervised. 11 One-way windows allow coordinators, other teachers, and parents to see all of the room without interrupting learning. 12 Closed-circuit, security cameras could be added. 13 Glass doors also increase visibility from the halls into the rooms. Health & Safety: 14 Counters are lowered to children’s level. Kitchen-style sinks with tall faucets allow easier cleaning of hands, utensils, and surfaces, as well as access to water for class projects. 15 An intercom system allows teachers to communicate with leaders as needed. Conceptual Drawings: This diagram demonstrates how concepts could be facilitated. The drawing probably is not proportional, but an architect will add that technical element.
