HANDBOOK OF AEROSPACE EMC A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF A PROPOSAL IN THE WORKS AND A POTENTIAL METHODOLOGY FOR TECHNICAL BOOKS PUBLISHING Ray Perez PhD, PE IEEE-Press/EMCS Liaison 9/17/2018

2 Characteristics of Present Inventory of Electromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC) published Books, sponsored by the IEEE EMC Society (EMCS). Eight books: 1 is three years old, all others are at least twice as old. All books are written by single authors 3. All books address fundamental principles and/or introductory knowledge about EMC 4. All books have faced strong competition from other similar books 5. Efforts over the past 5 years to recruit more “single” authors have not been productive: a) most qualified authors are very busy b) long lead effort ( last book took 4 years from start to finish, excluding production) and very prolonged level of sustained commitment required. c) most efforts never matured, did not go beyond proposal stage. 9/17/2018

3 New Approach: a) Applied EMC + b) Collaborative Effort
Chosen Topic(*): Aerospace=Aeronautics + Astronautics Probably the “oldest” application for EMC ( WW II-1945) High level of interest corroborated over the last few years: aerospace sessions at symposia have attracted large audiences and authors Very large numbers of practitioners as industry IS ALWAYS EVOLVING (e.g. UAV, space-plane...etc. as most recent). Possibility of future editions. Authors (and potential readers) have “hands-on” experience as practitioners and/or researchers. Will attract many non-EMC technologists. HANDBOOK: multiple chapters, each chapter addressing an “applied topic,” written by a knowledgeable practitioner. FAST production and publication. Work is in parallel, as opposed to serial mode Present competition: NONE. Great opportunity to capture large market share (*) aerospace technology, including EMC, is also Ray’s technical background 9/17/2018

4 Progress Report Call for authors: December 2012, April 2013 on the IEEE EMCS Newsletter Call for authors results and first progress report submitted to IEEE EMCS annual BOD meeting, in Denver, CO, during annual symposium (8/2013). Via VP of communications services. List of Authors and Topics was arrived to by end of May 2013 List of authors: 16 List of Topics (Chapters):15 International collaboration. Authors from: US, Europe, Australia, Central-Asia IEEE Press proposal form completed and submitted to IEEE-Press. Proposal reviewed. Open items: a) chapters outlines b) proposal reviewers’ list 5. Open items to be closed in September. First meeting with authors (online) in September. Search for chapter reviewers starts in October (we have 3 already) 9/17/2018

5 Looking to the Future We will start when proposal is approved and contractual items understood by all parties (including authors). 2. All 15 chapters will start in parallel. Estimated length of writing effort is about 6-8 months. Each chapter will average 50+ pages. Handbook could reach pages. 3. Review effort will start as soon as a given chapter is finished (asynchronous mode). Estimate is that reviews + additional editing by authors could take months. We will follow whatever format is most convenient to the publisher. The success of this effort can open the door to other future EMC applied topics: automotive, biomedical, wireless. 9/17/2018
