1 Bellwork Tuesday, April 17th Calculate the x & y intercepts from the graph. Write your answer as an ordered pair.

2 Organizing and Displaying Data
If data… Then use… is organized into categories where you can see how many are in each category… a bar graph changes over a period of time… a line graph compares categories to a whole set so you can see the percentage for each category… a circle graph

3 Line graphs are good to show change over time.
County Farms 248 What type of graph would you use to best represent this data? A. Bar graph B. Line graph C. Circle graph Why?? Line graphs are good to show change over time.

4 Degrees Held by Faculty
What type of graph would you use to best represent this data? A. Bar graph B. Line graph C. Circle graph Why?? Circle graphs are good to show parts of a whole.

5 Bar graphs are good to show the number in each category.
Flowers for Mom What type of graph would you use to best represent this data? A. Bar graph B. Line graph C. Circle graph Why?? Bar graphs are good to show the number in each category.

6 How much the axis goes up by
Bar graphs can be misleading because… the y-axis doesn’t start at zero the scale isn’t even ** A scale on a graph means: How much the axis goes up by

7 What’s misleading about this graph?
About how many times taller is the Democrats bar than the other bars? How can you change the graph to make it appear more accurate? It appears to be nine times as tall 100 democrats, 100 republicans, and 100 independents were asked… It looks like the Democrats had nine times as many people agree than everyone else. Make the y-axis start at zero so the bars aren’t so stretched out. Ms. Batliner thinks teachers should get paid more. Do you agree?

8 The same data: Same data!

9 What’s misleading about this graph?
A survey was taken to determine favorite food. Which bar appears to be the size of the Hot Dogs bar? About how many times taller does the Hot Dogs bar appear to be than the Pizza bar? How can you change the graph to make it more accurate? What’s misleading about this graph? It appears to be twice as tall It looks like Hot Dogs are waaaaaaaaaay more popular than Pizza and Hamburgers. The Hamburgers bar because about 7 of the Hamburgers bar would fit into the Hot Dogs Bar Make the y-axis start at zero so the bars don’t look so stretched out. Food Votes Pizza 972 Hot dogs 987 Hamburgers 955

10 A survey was taken to determine favorite food.
Same data! Food Votes Pizza 972 Hot dogs 987 Hamburgers 955

What was the average salary for Company Y? What was the average salary for Company Z? What’s misleading about this graph? $42,700 It looks like Company Y pays their employees a LOT more. Make the y-axis start at zero $41,800

12 the y-axis doesn’t start at zero the scale isn’t even
Line graphs can be misleading because… the y-axis doesn’t start at zero the scale isn’t even
