1 The State of Social Science education in M-DCPS
Much to celebrate and so much more to accomplish.

2 The Current Situation in Social Sciences in M-DCPS is…..
EOC Data- How did we do? For 11th grade U.S. History- 3rd consecutive year showing growth/improvement. For 7th grade Civics- 2nd consecutive year showing growth/improvement.

Civics is a middle-grades course, and most students take it while in grade 7 (n=25,925) Outpaced the state, with a 3 percentage point increase in Civics. 8 Based on this information……
Where do we need to improve as a District? How do we get there? How can we improve our approaches for students who are struggling to reach proficiency levels? Are we collaborating with school-site talent who specialize in SPED and ESOL?

9 Elementary- laying the foundation (especially in grades 4 and 5).
Everybody has a role…… Elementary- laying the foundation (especially in grades 4 and 5). MS. Change is Sequence of Courses- 20 of the 35 EOC assessed benchmarks for Civics can de directly correlated to MS U.S. History SHS. World History- 11 of the 18 EOC assessed benchmarks for 11th grade U.S. History can be directly correlated to 9th grade World History.

10 Everybody has a role…… Skills. All Social Sciences courses have the paramount responsibility of emphasizing skills that can be uniquely enhanced in Social Science education: Analysis of Primary and Secondary Sources Citing Evidence to Support Conclusions Developing Positive Civic Dispositions (engaged citizenry) Evaluating Credible Sources of Information Developing a Respect for and Appreciation for History (cultural literacy); and Speaking and Writing to inform and persuade.

11 New Resources to Support Social Sciences Goals……
Elementary- History Labs for Grades 4 and 5 MS. Stand-alone Lessons Tied to Civics for the New 6th Grade U.S. History Course. SHS. Stand-alone Lessons Tied to U.S .Hisory for the 9th grade World History Course. Financial Literacy- K-12 lessons (15 per grade level) emphasizing skills students will need to be financially literate individuals. Updated History Labs for Grades 4-11. MS and SHS Law Studies Frameworks. Best Practices in Mastering Academic Vocabulary. In your break-out sessions you will have more information on these new resources.
